I sincerely doubt that there’s any real music lovers left in this country who haven’t heard of this band yet. However, there is still a disturbingly large amount of Australians who get their music knowledge from Video Hits and So Fresh compilations, so for their benefit, here is Little Red. Comprising of five school aged boys from Melbourne, Little Red embodies everything that made pop music great in the ’60s; multi-layered vocal harmonies, tight-ass clean guitars and more hooks than you can throw a stick at. And in an age when ‘It’s too late to apolo-giiiiiiiiise’ has become a mainstream phenomenon, it’s nice to know that there’s still a band around that are happy to sing pretty little ditties about girls and love and soda and stuff.
The reason Little Red have been showing up on everybody’s radar lately is thanks to the Garage to V competition, a national battle of the bands which culminates in the winners having the opportunity at the Aussie V Festival. Judging from the audience present at the Grand Final of the comp, and the calibre of the acts on offer, it didn’t seem like these kids had a chance in hell, especially when up against the explosive dance-punk of Sydney’s Casette Kids. But then they hit the stage in matching school uniforms, armed with three debonair lead vocalists and song after song of sing-along, clap-your-hands-say-yeah glory.
Sure, they sounded a hell of a lot like the Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Monkees, whatever. But let us not forget, friends, that it is these bands who wrote possibly the greatest tunes in history. It wasn’t Gang of Four or Joy Division, whose spectres loomed over every other band in the finals. The audience couldn’t get enough of Little Red, and neither, it seemed, could the judges. The band took out first place, and unfortunately ended up playing to about ten people in the opening hours of Sydney’s V Fest. But this is only the beginning for these guys, who have already toured the country in support of Duran Duran (yay!) and will inevitably get signed to Modular or Ivy League. Either way, I don’t care, the tunes still leave a smile on my dial.

I’m not so keen on the music; lots of up-and-comings sound like the strokes or the arctic monkeys in Oz at the moment. Good stuff for a young band though. Singer has a great vocie
Every hook, line and melody is recycled from the 60’s. Its fine to draw on your influences for inspiration though every band should be finding their “own” unique sound – not ripping off someone elses & hoping no one will notice.

These’s guys are true Australians and they rock the socks of everyone! there bringing back the well needed swinging beats of the 60’s! And to who ever is bad mouthing them, get a life and find your self some “main stream” shit that comes to your “dare I say it” high standerds of force fed shit music that the “normal” people listen to.
