Art vs. Science – ‘Flippers’

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 6 or above) is required to play this audio clip. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Sydneysiders Art vs. Science seem to have a very clear game plan. They make upbeat music for excitable people. Their style is uncomplicated, energetic and most critically, fun. They even provide simple to follow instructions on how best to enjoy it. This, for example, is what you should do when listening to Flippers:

1) I see you dancing with your flippers
2) I see you swimming with your flippers
3) I see you clapping with you flippers
4) Getting Happy with your flippers.

Of course you don’t have to follow these rather cryptic instructions. You could just wave your hands and feet in a way that would look unbelievably stupid if you were to do it in any other context. Ah, the liberating quality of music. Everybody should know what it feels like to dance like a giant penguin in the snow.

these guys are fucking shit, seriously, i saw them recently at oxford art factory, and they were so fucking shit i almost threw up.

Ps. they are fucking ugly too – not that it really matters in terms of the music, but meh, its true.

  2. Dave says:

Er, excuse me rob balkin, as far as I’m aware they’ve never played a gig at the oxford art factory, so you must have your bands mixed up – anyway, the song rocks, as do the band

  3. Trev says:

Seen em at splendour.. they fuckin rocked!!

  4. Jessi Webb says:

These guys are going to go far in the future!
Their song flippers is already getting tonnes of airplay on triple j!
And also they aren’t ugly, they are nice looking young men i would say :)

  5. Jade says:

Re Rob Balkin. Harden the f#*#* up dude. These guys rock. I vote best pump up song I’ve heard in ages!

  6. balkz says:

Haha good one to whoever used my name to post that comment :/

  7. Mia says:

Balkin you shit you’ve never seem them play. Go punch some trumpets. And to Dave they’ve played a lot at Oxford Art…

  8. Tammy says:

Art v Science is the one of the best Australian Bands
around ‘Flippers’ is a rocking hit

  9. abby says:

I saw these guys playing at vanshe and they were amazing!! i loved them, especially the parlez vous francais song!!

  10. Tim says:

Don’t be fooled in to thinking that Art Vs Science are all about the flippers song, these guys play an impressive set full of quality, catchy songs. I saw these guys with Van She and then with the Galvatrons last night and they were brilliant. I have never seen a support band get such a great crowd reaction! This music makes you want to dance, is fun and exciting- and furthermore, the energy that these guys give off on stage is fantastic. If you ever get a chance, watch them live , and I hope these guys become successful, cause they deserve it

  11. Duh says:

Great song it is, pity though that JJJ have played the sh.t out of it for the past 3 months and totally ruined it for me. They seem to do this with many great songs, especially when the artists are signed to them. HIGH ROTATION IS FOR SHORT TERMS ONLY KINGSMILL!!!

Or maybe I just need to listen to other stations :/

  12. Sanch says:

This band combined with Amy Meridith represent what is wrong with Australian music. No originality or talent. The most numbingly boring live set ever.

  13. Alana says:

Ive been trying to find out the name of this band ever since I seen them at the Beachie Festival. They were so much fun. .. I loved there music it made me happy and just want to dance.
After hearing them on Tripple j. I was stocked I found out who they are. Hope I get to see them again
    yay

  14. Emski says:

    Sanch – WTF?

AvS are amazing. One of the best bands kicking around at the moment.

  15. Miki says:

This song ROCKS! My partner is part of a swim club and I’m getting everyone to sing this at comps. Everyone laughs. This is catchy, dancy, and just plain great fun. It’s one of the happiest things to listen to. I’m buying everything they have for sale (seriously) just to support them.

  16. Matt says:

These guys are stunning. They recently played out our college and had the best crowd rapport I have ever seen. Having beer sculling competitions with each other before songs and making people dance so intense they nearly killed themselves is an amazing skill. Hollywood is there best song live.

  17. Chick13 says:

These guys are great for a party but when it comes to music making they’re pretty average. I’ve been checking out there myspace, and the songs, even though they’re all not exactly the same, do get a bit boring, and there isn’t really anything original about them. There are so many other more interesting artists around at the moment.

  18. Josh and huw in newy! says:

my favourite band to see live, ive seen them about 4 times and they never fail to amaze me. just saw them at groovin the moo in maitland, and everyone i spoke to agreed they were their pick of the festival. look out for their ep, its gunna be awsom!!!!

dan, dan and jimmy, you boys rock!!!!

  19. JB says:

These guys opened Good Vibes 09 in Sydney and started tearing the place up before everyone had even got in the gates. I’m yet to get my hands on their release (out just last Friday), but if their live set is anything to go by it’s going to be explosive.

  20. JL says:

rob balkin you are a cockhead. AvS are ridiculously good. saw them live at groovin the moo and they were easily the best act for the day. love em.

  21. amyy says:

    art vs science are awsome
saw them at groovin the moo recently and they were the best of the day!!

  22. Al says:

    sensational pinger based festival band

    as for any other occassion…….

  23. Big Whoop says:

The only reason I like this band is because they made me laugh so f’n hard at splendour last year. Promising sounds, but once they started singing I was in stitches. Stop practicing in front of the mirror boys! They must be taking the piss. I mean, why else would they write that shit?

  24. Big Whoop says:

One more thing, that guy looks so much like Jon Heder.

  25. Bekaa says:

    seeing them, 29th august !
    at oxford art factory.
    geeeeeeeeedd.
    do you guys know any other songs besides;
flippers, hollywood, parlez vous francais? && we lost a friend?

Come out with us to...
