The Mean Streaks stay true to their name, even after using similar instrumentation and arrangements their songs have a darker tone and a more urgent beat than their pop neighbours. Front woman Jean Nicotine leads her six piece outfit with intense chorus outbursts in much of their repertoire. They have shared the stage with Spoon, The Buzzcocks, Har Mar Superstar, The Presets, Faker, Love of Diagrams and Pharaohs. When I contacted Jean last she said they were taking a break from performing to record some new tracks. They started playing live again recently so I hope that means new recordings will be available soon. [...]

here is my perspective on this from southern california: i thought that pitchfork review was mean spirited- but that is how they roll. presets certainly are coming here a lot, i will probably see them in mid sept. and they already played beauty bar san diego(which is way into australian music). we didn’t even submit our band’s record because we feel it will be judged “dance-punk”.

Don’t get me started on Margaret. Her rating system has as much to do with the reality of whether a film is good or not as particle operations in quantum physics have to do with the time it takes me to catch the train to work. i.e. possibly something, but it’s unclear exactly what.

geez, helluva review soph. very accurate.

Im kind of indifferent to the Presets myself, but i still have this patriotic knee-jerk reaction which makes me angry when i see pitchfork ripping into them.
sure, fashion and music have spent a lot of time in bed together over the years, but its this current trend with modular, tsubui, and sydney bands in the vein of Valentinos, Van She, Presets etc that shits me to tears.
maybe its just sour grapes cause my legs are too irregular to fit into the jeans. i dunno.

and lay off margaret! if she was only 40 years younger…

Great piece, almost makes me wanna do a retake on them, but something just doesn’t gel. They’re great, fascinating musicians. I agree they’re clever. But I think it’s cleverness in the Malcolm McLaren style – i.e. masterful marketing, but musically not too interesting at all.
