Ladyhawke – ‘Back Of The Van’

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 6 or above) is required to play this audio clip. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I’ve been hunting down this song for ages and finally got it from a friend who emailed it to me a few days ago. It’s one of the catchiest tune I’ve heard in ages and though it is shamelessly retro, it has a timeless mood and melody to it that I know you will enjoy. As mentioned previously Ladyhawke aka Pip is from Sydney and she plays guitar for Teenager. Rumours are she has a deal in the works with a major and is currently going round the world on a writing trip…whatever that means.

  1. streetparty used to play with one quite frequently a few months a go.

Wow, that sound is phenomenal. She seems to take that retro sound, utilized by groups like Van She, to the extreme — ie. she is pure retro. I love it.

Not to be confused with Ladyhawk of course – do I sense another spurious name-change in the not to distant future a la The Vendettas or Shaky Hands?

  3. Chambermaid says:

This has to be one of the most widely circulated demos I have heard of in recent years- so many people have it but apparently she only ever gave out about 6 copies!
Shes a New Zealand girl, based in Sydney. Used to play lead guitar in a Wellington garage/classic heavy rock style band called Two Lane Blacktop who were doing well, had toured Australia and USA and were on the eve of a second US tour when they ‘imploded’. They have a release on Infidelity in Australia.

Two Lane Blacktop sucked, but Teenager are pretty good!

  5. Jerry Soer says:

That’s right upon further digging Pip Brown turns out to be quite the experienced touring musician. I really am hoping she does something with this Ladyhawke project more so than the Teenager stuff. This song is just a killer.

  6. WHATUP KIDDDDDS says:

TOO BAD THERE’S ALREADY A BAND CALLED LADYHAWK FROM VANCOUVER AND THEY SHRED!!!!!

I think this is just being released as a single now – and we psoted it over a year ago!! We rule Jerry hahaha.

  12. johns says:

fuck, that’s the most contrived press shot ever? ‘hey i’m cool, look at my vinyl all placed around for you to know how cool I am, whilst being totally real but sounding like every other modular band going around at the moment.’

  13. Jerry Soer says:

Actually this shot was taken a year before she signed to Modular

  14. Chris says:

LadyHawke is a babe. I am developing a crush for real. Two Lane Blacktop were all good except for one member, who, coincidentally, was a penis, you know who you are dick. Her track Manipulative Lady or woman or whatever is the clincher “don’t step in my head, you cant handle the nightmare” is too good.
