DRAMA FOR YAMAHA – Island Pop

Listen to

So I agree that the whole Tribal/Island pop/Afrobeat thing that’s been happening in music this year is starting to sound a bit done… but then, new music shouldn’t always be judged solely on how far it pushes things forward. After all, a good song is a good song.

Defensive diatribes aside, Drama For Yamaha are from Melbourne – and the above track is lifted from their forthcoming debut, ‘Archipelago’.

Boat Beam – ‘The Rain Pauly’

Listen to

So it turns out that Josephine of Sparkadia is now in this gorgeously gentle folky trio in Madrid called Boat Beam, and they seem to be kinda popular (check their Myspace). How crazy is that?

p.s. I could listen to this song for days.

Underlapper – Renfield (Faux Pas remix)

Listen to

In 2007, Sydney’s Underlapper released their second album, ‘Red Spring’. Having evolved into a six-piece post-rock ensemble, Red Spring’s (mostly) instrumentals were expansive, glitchy, often beautiful, and the perfect source material for a remix album.

Fast-forward to now (whoosh!), and Underlapper have delivered on this latent promise with ‘Red Spring Remixes’, featuring this standout cut courtesy of Melbourne producer Faux Pas – true to the original’s gentle pacing, while adding a beat that you could (conceivably) dance to.

Red Riders – ‘You’ve Got A Lot Of Nerve’

Listen to

Sydney’s Red Riders return like some ragged, four-headed phoenix with ‘You’ve Got A Lot Of Nerve’ – the first single off their forthcoming second album, Drown In Colour.

Seemingly signaling a shift in musical direction from the nocturnal dance-floors aesthetic of their excellent debut Replica Replica, ‘Nerve’ instead gives us big, blissed out guitar-pop, built around an ostensibly understated chorus that I’ve had stuck in my head all day. Like, all fucking day.
