All India Radio Go Viral

Stop-motion enthusiasts: you deserve a beer and a big fat gold plated horse for your patience to your art.

Melbourne animator Darcy Prendergast and the mega skilled dudes at Oh Yeah Wow are testament to that. The vid for ‘Rippled’ off All India Radio’s ninth record took six months to complete. No digital manipulation, no special effects – just painful frame-by-frame long exposure techniques. Since it was uploaded last week, it’s hit 101,605 (and still climbing).

The video is 2.0 for the OHW/All India Radio collab. The clip for ‘Lucky’ (which uses similar light painting techniques) took out best animated music video at the St Kilda Film Festival last year and was shortlisted for exhibit at the Guggenheim.

Making it to the ninth album is a mean feat, so it’s fitting that this clip is of equal ‘!!!’ proportions.

Brisbane’s “The Troubadour” to close.

November 4, 2010 Posted by: Sophie Benjamin     8 Comments Arts, Industry, News

Iconic Brisbane venue The Troubadour is closing at the end of the month. There had been rumblings around the Brisbane music scene about rising rents and the changing face of the Valley, but this is the biggest loss to the Valley’s live music precinct since The Rev became a dance club.

Here’s the presser from the venue’s website:

It’s news that will rock the Brisbane music community – the heart and soul of Brisbane’s music community, the iconic The Troubadour will be calling last drinks and closing its doors forever come the end of November.

In what will be a devastating blow to the town with a matter that has gone beyond the control of owners Jamie Trevaskis and Corinna Scanlon, the beloved music venue will close its doors on Sunday, November 21.

More information as to how the venue will be farewelled and why it is closing will be released in the very near future.  The Troub crew would like to extend gratitude to every single band, artist and punter who has graced the venue in the last seven and a half years.

The future of “The Troubadour” name and recognisable aesthetic remains uncertain but for now, the dream is over.

See the bullshit for yourself right here.

Since opening in 2003, The Troub has played host to bands too numerous to mention. Small-time local bands and big-name international touring acts have squeezed onto the small stage and squinted at the crowd through the red stage lights (a photographer’s nightmare).

Share your favourite Troub lineups and memories in the comments.

Grolsch Grid

Tonight the Grolsch Grid kicks off. They claim it’s good Dutch lager, but I’m too uniformed to know otherwise. Decent brew or not, the guys have put together a collab celebrating local creativity to please your eyes and ears over the next few nights.

Art and audiovisual happenings will be hitting the streets of Melb’s CBD from Oct 21 – Oct 24.

Grolsch have partnered up with the creative minds behind the likes of Alpha 60, Gorker Gallery, Somewhere Store, Vice and more, who’ll be putting up limited edition street posters around the city, so keep an eye out.

Nothing quite says ‘Melbourne’ like pulling up an empty wooden crate/oil can/garbage lid in a seedy Chinatown alleyway, having smoke blown in your face by the hipster collective and listening to an occasional rad tune. Tonight Broken Pixel, Charles Ives Singers, Sone, Netzair & Kod will kick off the proceedings at Section 8 from 8pm. Collarbones and a heap of other interesting acts are also on the bill. It’s free, and well worth checking out.

Papercuts Collective – Launch and zine fair

September 1, 2010 Posted by: Sophie Benjamin     No Comments Arts

When you’re a kid growing up in the country, you are not only forced, but encouraged to make your own fun. Games with the electric fence, riding your pushbikes off jumps into dams and all sorts of other unsafe but stimulating activities. It’s kind of the same in Brisbane. Our liquor licencing laws are screwy and venue owners are scared, so D.I.Y. venues pop up across the city like field mushrooms.

With the city lacking a Sticky Institute or Format zine store, the Brisbane zine scene is also like the metaphorical mushroom field – and not just because it is fueled by the city’s bullshit. *boom tish*

SO: the Papercuts Collective are having a triple zine launch and zine fair at Bleeding Heart Gallery in the city. Bianca Valentino’s “Conversations with Punx: A Spiritual Dialogue” (featuring interviews with Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins and more)  Staples’ travel zine “Whenever I see a bearded hobo on the street, I’ll think of you and smile” and Matt Limmer’s art will be launched tomorrow night, with a zine fair at the same location on Friday night. My zines will also be there if you’d like to come and say hi or tell me I’m shit at life.

Never judge a CD by its cover #1

August 29, 2010 Posted by: Sophie Benjamin     1 Comment Arts, New Music

Welcome to 2010, where MP3s cost nothing and are worth as much, and even your Grandma has the skills to record show tunes and hymns before burning them to a CD-R.

It’s no wonder people aren’t rushing out to buy bog-standard glossy jewel case CDs. Sometimes some creative and aesthetically pleasing packaging can be the difference between your CD gathering dust on the shelf and your work of art being exchanged for cash monies.

After the cut are some of the more interesting CDs that have found their way onto my desk in the last few months. If you’re in a band and have a CD that you think I’d like the look and/or sound of, email me at sophie [at] whothehell [dot] net for my postal address.

Ward Roberts ‘COURTS’ exhibition @ No Vacancy’s Project Space

July 15, 2010 Posted by: Melissa Tan     No Comments Arts

‘Sports courts are subjects to extremes, battered by the stomps and stamps of players or else left in silence.  For many, the attraction to healthy recreational activities has been replaced by faster, louder viewing experiences. The surrounding buildings that feature in many of these images give us a clue to where all the playing action has gone – indoors.’

Went to the opening of this exhibition last week. While the courts in many of these photos appear neglected and lonely, it’s hard to bypass the diversity of each – shifting from clean urban tones to sudden vibrant arrays of colour in intruiging cultural settings. A finalist in the New York Photo Festival, winner of the xTO Fine Art Award in 2009 and currently exhibiting in Hong Kong, London and Colorado, young Melbourne photographer Ward Roberts is set for rad things. A charming minimalist sentiment attached to this series which makes it definitely worth having a look at.

If you’re in Melbourne, drop by No Vacancy’s Projectspace held @The Atrium at Federation Square, where this (free) exhibition is showing until the 1st of August.

Cardboard Tube Fighting League

June 28, 2010 Posted by: Sophie Benjamin     No Comments Arts, News

I have fond memories of playing sword-fighting games with my little brother, winning and making him cry. Then there were the times where I beat him with a hollow cardboard tube. *badoom-tssh*

Seriously though, this has to be the best piece of Facebook event invite spam I’ve ever received.
On Saturday July 10 at 2pm, a  bunch of people are going to meet up at the park behind the Milton State School in Brisbane (cardboard suit of armor is optional) and fight each other with cardboard tubes. I’ve just moved house, so I’m going to make myself some badass protective gear with my leftover moving boxes.

The Facebook event invite is here.

DJ Pogo

DJ Pogo – ‘UPular’, remix of the Pixar movie ‘UP’

I’ve only recently discovered the work of Perth’s DJ Pogo who makes remixes of popular films. It’s really interesting how he’s sidestepped the whole bloghouse remix world and just went straight to popular culture.

DJ Pogo – ‘Alice’, remix of Disney’s animated film Alice in Wonderland

By his youtube viewing count alone on makes DJ Pogo one of the most popular musicians out of Australia at the moment.

DJ Pogo – ‘Skynet Symphonic’, remix of the movie Terminator 2. All sounds in the remix sampled from the film’s sound track.
