LISTEN: Sarsha Simone ‘Gold’ EP

I feel there could be a turf war between Melbourne and Sydney soul soon. Down here, we’ve got a knack for big brass; as Saskwatch, Clairy Browne, and The Cactus Channel have gone on to reflect the city’s penchant for gritty live shows. And in true form, Sydney’s hit back with something slick. That person behind it all is Sarsha Simone.

Previously front woman of Dojo Cuts—a revivalist funk outfit—Simone has brought out the Gold EP: five tracks that serve up a mix of neo-soul, hip-hop, and contemporary RnB. But, Simone’s voice is hard to place.  It’s raspy in part, but it’s smooth as well — almost like Winehouse’s raw voice on her debut Frank. You can her this more clearly on Jazz Soul Scent, Simone’s recent collaboration with French artist DJ Moar. And, in the vein of your neo-RnB revivalists, she can rap to boot.  This could raise ire in others, but she seems to rap in a style that’s akin to spoken word poetry on tracks like ‘All Night’. And of course, you could look to the likes of Candice Monique for further comparisons.

The EP ticks all the boxes of the RnB tragic. Gold presents themes of lust, sensuality, and sultry nights out in language of the genre. You’ve got your usual dose of heavy bass, with Simone directly addressing you on tracks like ‘Move’.  And while it’s safe to say that Hiatus Kaiyote has broken the ceiling for local neo-soul, this EP doesn’t seem to following its direct path. On ‘Gold’, the EP ramps up the electronica, with vocal lines distorted and melodies that break out of RnB’s DNA.

But, ‘Goin On’ seems to be the front-runner. With a bass line that subtly references funk, this track illustrates why future soul has become as big as it is now. This reminds me of ‘Everytime’, a track from British producer Eric Lau, precisely because production takes a back seat to vocal agility. Here, Simone’s voice is allowed to fully branch out as you’re enveloped in her vibrato.

On the whole, Gold is a tight release that knows how to play to its strengths. Considering the sheer amount of acts that have spawned from the neo-soul trip, Simone’s yet another welcome addition to a scene that’s hitting its stride.

Slamagotchi has always been, and always will be one of my favourite Australian producers. He’s always two steps ahead in his visions and his message through music. When his debut album drops it’ll create a serious stir…

 

2. Mei Saraswati

Mei Saraswati’s music is the purest form of expression. It’s so free & so goddamn funky, I seriously cannot get enough. Hands down, she’s my favourite vocalist in Australian music. Here’s hoping we one day get a chance to create music together.

 

3. Silent Jay

No one’s drums smack as hard as the brother Silent Jay! His production is so clean, although seems effortless in such an incredible way. Every time I see him perform live I leave with a sore neck from getting down so hard.

 

4. Nakagin

Nakagin has this beautiful way of creating the most encapsulating wall of luscious soundYou feel like you’re wandering through a rainforest just after a sun shower with the light peering through the leavesSuch amazing music from such an incredible person I’m fortunate enough to know.

5. How Green

How Green is undeniably one of the most underrated producers in the country. Adelaide based, he’s going to cause a serious stir once his music blesses more & more eardrums in the coming months & years.

LISTEN: Eddie Numbers – Let Me Breathe (S.F.T Remix)

Don’t you just love it when Soundcloud suddenly cuts to a track that you actually really dig?

Enter this remix by S.F.T, a Kiwi producer signed to Auckland’s Renaissance Music. We all know that all NZ urban music puts its Australian equivalents to shame, and this is no different. This remix of fellow Auckland native, Eddie Numbers, is one thumping track that all urban/beat lovers should get on to, pronto (you can take a listen to Numbers’ original EP Try Before You Buy, here). The verses in this track are tight, not to mention the killer choruses. This definitely fits snugly with the current melodic flavour hitting Triple J at the moment – but it isn’t naff.

I strongly suggest that you stop what you’re doing and just take a listen the opener (plus his entire Soundcloud) to lap up all this Kiwi hawtness.

LOOK: Northside Records – 10th Birthday

I’ve always been jealous of Fitzroy’s Gertrude St. For those of you not living in the World’s Most Liveable city, let me put it this way. SYD think Newtown, and BRIS think Fortitude Valley (the rest of you, well, make it up). Once a thoroughfare seen as the embodiment of Melbourne’s polar socio-economic disadvantage, the street has gone on to transform itself into one of Melbourne’s most hallowed hang out spots. And while the throes of gentrification have taken most of old Gertrude, she’s still got her soul, and quite a ragin’ one at that.

Northside Records has perched itself on top of Gertrude for 10 years now this month, and it’s fitting that a proposed in-store celebration turned into an accidental street party.

With the vast expanse of the National Gallery of Victoria’s Great Hall transformed into a live music venue, the gems of Melbourne’s indie scene came out to play with the Gallery’s priceless collection. Featured as part of the Labels Series for Melbourne Music Week, the night showcased the best of the labels’ respective talent. With the neo-90s penchant of Two Bright Lakes, to the innovative electronica from Cutters Records, this was one hell of a variety night.

Deez is a fresh Melbourne beats-producer guy that is putting out free shit through his BandCamp, the latest of which is ‘missinU’. This track broodingly builds atmosphere then drops with a sampled vocal and loose glitchy flow. It’s catchy stuff but the hint of James Blake could be stronger, making the overall track darker thus delivering on the mood of the intro.
