Velcro – ‘Portsea’

Listen to

Velcro has completed another ep called Wagga Wagga. In his free time between The Ocean Party and being the awesome new guitarist for Love Connection, he managed to master another seven tales of life, loss and brooding love. The honesty in this nice guy is so intoxicating that you feel like old friends as you wind your way through his slacker stories. Its like watching a black and white Linklater film, drenched in charming character and devoid of pretence. ‘Portsea’ is a highlight for sure but look out for the whole package in August.

Pop Singles – ‘Overcast’

Pop Singles ‘ (mp3)

Yeah so I’m in love hey. Not necessarily with Pop Singles, more so with my own youth and how familiar it feels after listening to this crackling vinyl release by Pop Singles. When I was a bored kid I’d ride my motorbike over to my buddies, buy a record and laze away the day in his garage. As we stared at the smoky shafts of sunlight, zoning out to the hopeless despair of Nirvana’s unplugged, we didn’t need more in life. Pop Singles have released their debut LP on Vacant Valley, titled ‘All Gone’. It’s a record that sounds honest, beautiful and warm but at the same time completely hopeless and desolate. Oh fuck yeah.

You can feel the reality and smell the dank. This kind of nonchalance could only emanate from uncertain youth, beauty and heaps of talent. Their live shows are no nonsense; don’t give a fuck, 45 mins of nostalgic pleasure. Comforting post-punk of a time gone by. Like hearing ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ for the first time. Stirring memory of misadventures, Pop Singles have a dark spunk that’s rare amongst lo-fi acts. A sound fashioned from shadowy guitar, deep clear bass vibrations and snappy drums united by vocals that conjure the emotions of a hazy experience you’ve probably never had. Pop Singles may think all this ain’t no thing but their sound is in fact, the real deal.

New War – ‘Revealer’

New War – ‘Revealer’ (mp3)

This is a cracking track from New War’s self titled LP released this week. I really like the immediate launch into business with this track. There is no long winding build, it’s action stations from the get go as New War kicks off this intense statement of serious rockin. Drivin by bass and some damn catchy oh la la’s, ‘Revealer’ has some subtle screaming gasps unified through machine gun drumming that is both haunting and dramatic. A nice taste from the LP which is sure to be worth checking out.

Field Trip – ‘Cream’ (mp3)

“You should shut your mouth, you don’t know what you’re talking about”. Hmm, I hope they’re not talking about our humble music blog. Melbourne lads, Field Trip released their EP ‘Cream’ early in the year. We featured the ‘Give Me A Break’ video recently which got me interested in hearing the whole EP. It’s good folks. Fiona Apple comes after them in my itunes and the unfortunate comparison highlights the low-fi production which is ok but I can’t help thinking these guys could hit Oasis highs with their raw talent. Cream has a nice fuzzy hum and for sure the 60’s surfer cruise must come naturally because the guitar licks are neither pretentious nor over cooked. Apparently they are done with shows for the year so pick up the EP and long for the summer.

The Field Trip – ‘Give Me A Break’ Video

, , No Comment

The Field Trip – ‘Give Me A Break’ video looks like a collection of Super 8 shots but given the jello effect I’m gonna go ahead and guess it was shot with a DSLR and then given a ‘vintage look’. Please tell me if I’m wrong. Either way these kids are from Melbourne and have adopted the 60’s surfer fuzz sound that is easy on the ears just as the video is easy on the eyes. Nice work, look forward to more from these dudes.

The Ocean Party – ‘In A Knot’ (mp3)

‘In A Knot’ is the new single from the Ocean Party that is available as a free download and comes with a few B-sides as well. This track has a 90’s throwback to the Dinosaur Jr. era. There is something country about the deep vocals and a spoken verse/sweet melodic chorus sounds. ‘In A Knot’ has a warmth that feels familiar and a real catchy hook. The understated tone disguises the maturity of this band and I find this sound really comforting. The B-sides are well worth checking out too, in particular ‘Young Love’ which has a real dreamy peculiarity.

I didn’t bother rewriting this stuff lifted from their FaceBook – To celebrate the release of In A Knot, The Ocean Party will play a Saturday front-bar residency at the Tote Hotel in Collingwood throughout July, joined by two guests each week.

7th. W/Autoportraits & Extreme Wheeze
14th W/Full Ugly & Palm Springs
21st W/Cat Cat & Grand Prismatic
28th W/MSG & Wild Oats (Adelaide)

Deez – ‘missinU’

Deez – ‘missinU’ (mp3)

Deez is a fresh Melbourne beats-producer guy that is putting out free shit through his BandCamp, the latest of which is ‘missinU’. This track broodingly builds atmosphere then drops with a sampled vocal and loose glitchy flow. It’s catchy stuff but the hint of James Blake could be stronger, making the overall track darker thus delivering on the mood of the intro.

Def worth checking out a bunch of Deez here – http://deeez.bandcamp.com/
