Blackmilk – ‘Rattle the Cage’ (mp3)

Blackmilk sound like one of those easy rockin bands out of ‘Almost Famous’. They came together in the hills of Perth – not sure where that is? But it’s what the presser says. Maybe its where they make the meth for the miners… ‘Rattle the Cage’ is a laid back affair with a smooth hook, a nostalgic sound and good vocals by James Sherry. Their debut LP is due out soon, we’ll keep you posted.

Runner – ‘Flaws’ (mp3)

Oh man, it really pleases me to come across such talent from all over this fine land. I caught this band on the Fat Shan winter playlist and grabbed the ‘Indiana’ Ep on BandCamp. I pretty much instantly fell for the whole thing. I haven’t heard much of this sound coming from Perth at the moment (please write in and tell how wrong I am). There seems to be more love for vintage rock over there but these guys have the hazy instrumental sound of Gersey with the whimsical vocals of Sandpit. Yep, late 90’s stoner. The last track ‘Pilgrim’ is probably the odd-man out amongst a really coherent progression of melody. This is a standout Ep that kicks off with a nice instrumental piece leading into ‘Flaws’ and carries an understated tone throughout what is, well crafted indie dream pop.

Fox + Sui – ‘Summer Storm’ (mp3)

‘Summer Storm’ is taken from the debut six track release called ‘Taboo’ by Fox + Sui. A collaboration between Andras Fox and Sui Zhen who are from Melbourne and Sydney respectively but now making sweet tunes together in Melbs. Ah, to be young and talented… how lovely for us. Andras is the swinging producer beats-guy and Sui is the cute indie pop vocal-gal. Together they make winter bearable with warm tones washing through clicks and chimes and playful lyrics. ‘Summer Storm’ feels like jumping in puddles and playing dress-up with your best friends, truthful and sweet. The Ep is officially due out June 19 with a 7inch vinyl release that will feature ‘Summer Storm’ and ‘Moon Nightclub’, available at cool record stores.

YouTube Preview Image

This is quite simply a beautifully shot video of a little story in the Kimberley region of Australia’s north west. Incredible colour and vast landscapes explored through the tale of a couple of kids hoping to fly away. Love to know how they got the aerial car shot – chopper on an indie budget?

You know I love credits so here goes, Writer/Director: Joshua Bowyer and DOP: Mark Zagar. Produced by Jamie Kuzich, assistant producer: Kate Jones. 1st AD: Brad Holyoake, Camera Assist: Rebecca Crowe, Costumes: Emma Bergmier, Editor: Joshua Bowyer, Colourist/VFX: Sandy Sutherland.

Galapagoose – ‘Rhizome’ (mp3)

Taken from the recently released album Commitments, ‘Rhizome’ is a gorgeous track from Galapagoose. I really dig the way he swallows up the vocals in a soaring wall of sound. The organ break beats and Portishead like machine-gun blips are killer. His work is everywhere at the moment. Remixing Young Magic with Wooshie, making videos and playing plenty of shows.

Snakadaktal – Dance Bear by iohyouparty

‘Dance Bear’ is Snakadaktal’s red hot new release. When a single like this ‘drops’ every hip blog orgasms cause this kind of youth, beauty and talent = hits! Those frothing maniacs at IOHYOU aren’t looking back as they continue to nurture cool bands and Snakadaktal have delivered for them with ‘Dance Bear’. I am never cynical about a band like this because you can’t fake something that sounds this fresh in our clogged-up indie world. There is an honesty to this sound and I dig the passion in the vocals. Be prepared to hear all kinds of “best …” for this one.
