King Cannons – ‘Teenage Dreams’ (mp3)
Imma level with you and confess that I don’t really “get” ska music. Yeah, The Specials are pretty sick and I can totally see why people dig this stuff, but it’s just not ever going to take up much room on my iPod. King Cannons are a newly Melbourne-based but NZ-bred ska band that, to my non-connoisseur ears, tick all the right boxes for ska bands. It’s upbeat, fast, has more than five members, and has appropriate “stick-it-to-the-man” lyrics. I haven’t exactly thrashed ‘Teenage Dreams,’ but this is still well catchy and has at least made me come back for a few repeat listens. Plus I can’t remember the last ska band featured on whothehell.net.
If you’re into ska then let me know what you think of this one.

I really like this track and the King Cannons put on an amazing show. I would think of King Cannons more of a punk band with hints of reggae and ska… I really think they’re more like the Clash rather than the Specials or other two tone band…
Have another listen… It’s a great song, then listen to some other tracks… they’re a really great band…

I agree with Francis, labelling King Cannons Ska isn’t very acurate…it is indeed more akin to The Clash than The Specials.
I’m from London and grew up on the Jamaican/English hybrid music of the 80’s.
Alot of bands try to do the 2 tone thing and fail perhaps the wirter’s exposure to that kind of music is why he doesn’t “get” Ska…
I have been producing Reggae, Hip Hop and Ska for more than 15 years and I think that while King Cannons have some of those aformentioned influences they are very much their own band.
I for one will be looking for more of thier music in future and as Melbourne is my 2nd hoje I will be trying to catch one or both of those gigs….
Keep up the good work guys, great vibes.
