LISTEN: New Gods – ‘On Your Side’

New Gods is the band that Dominic Byrne and Adrian Beltrame from Little Red have found happier times in. A subtle line in their bio suggests they are ready to move on; so together with Richard Bradbeer on bass (Eagle and The Worm), Sam Raines on drums, and Dale Packard on keys (Ground Components) they have formed a sonic-prog, dance-rock, indie-pop band. I throw all these terms at this band because there is a lot packed into ‘On You Side’. Clearly these guys are a talented group and ‘On Your Side’ has a very accomplished sound for a first single even if it is kinda over cooked. I really dig the Richard Marx-like passion but maybe strip it right back and be more unashamedly pop…y’know, get mullets and some stone-washed denim jackets, that kinda thing.

‘Please Stay’

We plugged Edward Deer with his lovely ‘Washed Asore’ single in the lead up to his new record, titled About Monsters which is out today! Yes, along with sunshine and the impending festival joy comes this sweet release of gentle melody, rhythm and plenty of heart. The second single ‘Please Stay’ gives Ed a chance to grab your attention with a his strong vocals and some cracking break-out guitar licks.

PREMIERE: Piers Twomey – ‘Mountain Song’ Video

, , No Comment

Piers Twomey’s ‘Mountain Song’ video was directed by Katie Macqueen and shot by DOP Tim Barnsley. It’s a 1900’s costume-period narrative based video of ‘Mountain Song’ which is taken from ‘Strange Advice’ released earlier this year. It’s a sweet little tale of drama and the scenery is very local. I’m feeling romantic today so I’ll ignore the melodrama and take it as it is; a beautiful song with a lovingly folk presence. 4 stars.

Get along to one of these shows:

Sun Sept 9 – Annandale Hotel + Zoe Elliot – new folk evening (it’s back baby)

Thurs Oct 11 – Green Room Lounge, Enmore + Edward Deer + Miss Little

Wed Nov 15 – Yours & Owls, Wollongong + Hinterlandt

Thurs Nov 15 – Proper Music Social, Union in Newtown with the excellent Jamie Hutchings + Hinterlandt

WATCH: Love Migrate – ‘Making This Hard’

New video by Love Migrate for ‘Making This Hard’. The clip was directed by the very clever Dylan Wiehahn and filmed over three nights in and around the Main Range National Park, Queensland. Think Chris Martin walking on a beach singing ‘Yellow’, but in Australia and way more breathtaking. Debut record Plagued Are All My Thoughts, Like White Ants In The Fence is out October 12th through Flightless.

Donny Benet – ‘Treat Yourself’

Donny Benet – ‘Treat Yourself’

Listen to

‘Treat Yourself’ is taken from the brand spanking new Donny Benet record ‘Electric Love‘, due out September 7. It’s a time-warp record that takes you back to shiny jackets, leg warmers, fluoro and shoulder pads. ‘Electric Love’ is a sexy production from a man that lives in a discofied world. I love the urgency in the fast pace keys and clap synth. Donny Benet transcends any good time soundtrack by channelling John Hughes with a seedy Kings Cross style story telling. Now before you go getting physical over these hip disco beats, you should also note he is doing a ‘Dinner & Show’ thang at Sydney’s GoodGod Danceteria on launch day! Wow. So if you wanna ‘Treat Yo Self’. Get down on it. It’ll look something like this:

LISTEN: Pony Face – ‘Silver Tongue’

, , No Comment

Pony Face have just released their second album, Hypnotised. ‘Silver Tongue’ is the first single from the record and gives you a good feel for the broody-rock sound they have nailed on the LP. This single has been getting some love around the traps but we haven’t posted it yet so… well, now we have. More importantly though, the record sounds really good. The band’s new album was produced by Casey Rice who did the last Dirty Three record and much of the same atmospheric layering remains here. It’s the slow building Interpol vibe that draws you in and Pony Face have the depth to hold your interest.
