Aeons – ‘Via Lactea’ (mp3)

Listen to

This track has made it’s way onto the interwebs exclusively via the whothehell pigeonhole – home of all things musically awesome and antipodean. ‘Via Lactea’ is the second notch on the belt of Sydney’s Aeons, an unsigned electro duo of limited back catalogue but endless promise. Translating to ‘milky way’ in Latin, the song glides through rippling currents of intergalactic synth, building to some darkly cosmic vocals by singer Lance.  I’d say it’s only two ounces of oomph shy of some serious Gen Y Presets-style epic electro.

The Vanish – ‘Heartbeat’ (mp3)

Listen to

If you’re a dedicated JJJ or FBI listener, then you’ve probably already heard this track on the wireless. The Vanish are Brooklyn-based, Sydney-raised Mike Elmgreen and Pete Enestrom, who have arrived at nu-wave electro via their tween punk rock days and a mutual stint in starched Manhattan suitdom. Successfully resurrecting themselves from nine-to-five beigeness, these guys have managed to produce some seriously danceable numbers, which I would download right here if I were you.

Sydney peeps can catch the Pete half of the duo, with drummer, at Spectrum on May 13. Check myspace for details.

Fellow Australian music blog Electrorash, in conjunction with Universal and Nova 937, recently ran a remix competition for the Dukes of Windsor track ‘Runaway’. Perth trance tastemakers Jackson and Perry took out the top spot, as crowned by the Dukes themselves. Here it is, for your listening enjoyment.

Redcoats – ‘Devil’ (mp3)

Listen to

This Melbourne band first graced my musical radar when I returned from Berlin last year, with their dusky, blues-laden rock the perfect antidote to a summer-long of minimal, minimal, minimal, and the occasional avant-pop italo-disco dalliance. They were promptly filed under ‘awesome’ and briefly forgotten, until ‘Devil’ reached my inbox this month via my friend/housemate/partner in crime. Thanks Ms S.

And Melbourne-siders listen up – Redcoats are nearing the business end of their April residency at the Evelyn Hotel on Brunswick Street, so if you’re free this Tuesday or next you should definitely put in some face time. And yes people, it’s FREE, so you can keep your purse strings double knotted (unless of course you recently got stimulated – then I’ll have a G & T, thanks.)

Aleks and the Ramps – ‘Antique Limb’

Listen to

So their old stuff sounded a bit like the teletubbies on crack, and made no sense to anyone except those versed in a language consisting only of semi colons. And I don’t mean that in a good way.

Refreshingly their new stuff is more Architecture in Helsinki than arcane fail. This time injecting only infinitesimal doses of wack, the result is whimsical trip pop with vocals as tight as meggings. Finally hugging in all the right places. Keep them coming guys.

Skye Harbour – ‘Paying Debts’ (mp3)

Listen to

Not one for pop rock generally, with the genre tending to be riddled with teen angst, side parts, and liberally applied eye make up, Skye Harbour have cunningly snuck onto my musical radar and may just be my exception to the rule.

Just like Melbourne stole the Grand Prix from Adelaide back in ’96, so too has it enticed these four childhood friends seeking bigger and better things.

‘Paying Debts’ is one of a tidy offering of songs from their debut EP Houses (free to download right here). Lead singer Josh Hardy’s thick vocals are tempered with heartrending violins and heavily layered guitars. There’s just the right amount of broody with not an ounce of Pete Wentz.

And if you think that’s half decent, then multiply it by a million and spy them onstage. If you’re in Melbourne you’re in luck, just keep your eyes on their myspace and there’s sure to be a gig coming up.
