With the vast expanse of the National Gallery of Victoria’s Great Hall transformed into a live music venue, the gems of Melbourne’s indie scene came out to play with the Gallery’s priceless collection. Featured as part of the Labels Series for Melbourne Music Week, the night showcased the best of the labels’ respective talent. With the neo-90s penchant of Two Bright Lakes, to the innovative electronica from Cutters Records, this was one hell of a variety night.
New War – ‘Revealer’ (mp3)
This is a cracking track from New War’s self titled LP released this week. I really like the immediate launch into business with this track. There is no long winding build, it’s action stations from the get go as New War kicks off this intense statement of serious rockin. Drivin by bass and some damn catchy oh la la’s, ‘Revealer’ has some subtle screaming gasps unified through machine gun drumming that is both haunting and dramatic. A nice taste from the LP which is sure to be worth checking out.

‘Oh Hebe’ is the new single from Pigeon, a band from Brisbane that have ripped up the festival circuit and landed the QLD support slots for Van She. ‘Oh Hebe’ is not a typical indie dance track. It has a jarring vibration and slamming drum beat that is a bit twisted and I can see these guys up there with Art vs Science and winning plenty of JJJ love. They have heaps of shows coming up so check em: Friday 10th August – Sol Bar – Maroochydore Saturday 11th August – Alhambra Lounge – Brisbane Thursday 16th August – Transit Bar – Canberra Friday 17th August – Great Northern Hotel – Newcastle Saturday 18th August – Goodgod Small Club – Sydney Thursday 23rd August – Workers Club – Melbourne Friday 24th August – The Loft – Warrnambool Saturday 25th August – Ed’s Castle – Adelaide Friday 31st August – Great Northern – Byron Bay Saturday 1st September – Red Deer Festival –Mount Samson Like them here – http://www.facebook.com/pigeonsite |
Mount Pleasant – ‘Lakers’ (mp3)
‘Lakers’ is the first track from the EP named Cathedral created by Jonathan Phillips under the name Mount Pleasant. It’s a curious track that mixes quite a few styles but has an overall relaxed vibe. Phillips plays guitar and adds loops and effects with soft lyrics laid over the top. His sound is well mixed and he makes it all seem too easy. I like the style and dig his visual aesthetic too.

This is quite simply a beautifully shot video of a little story in the Kimberley region of Australia’s north west. Incredible colour and vast landscapes explored through the tale of a couple of kids hoping to fly away. Love to know how they got the aerial car shot – chopper on an indie budget?
You know I love credits so here goes, Writer/Director: Joshua Bowyer and DOP: Mark Zagar. Produced by Jamie Kuzich, assistant producer: Kate Jones. 1st AD: Brad Holyoake, Camera Assist: Rebecca Crowe, Costumes: Emma Bergmier, Editor: Joshua Bowyer, Colourist/VFX: Sandy Sutherland.

Velcro – ‘One Day’ (mp3)
Why Don’t You Believe Me? released a live cassette by Velcro at the Gasometer in Melbs on Friday night. The very limited tape includes two bonus home-recorded tracks and was mixed and mastered by Astral Traveller. ‘One Day’ is another moody slice of drama from the intoxicating Velcro. Guitar strumming his way through a journey of melancholy and innocent love, Velcro delivers some gentle indie pop rather then beats this time round. The Velcro band are playing The Liberty Social in Melbourne this Thursday and a solo thang at the Tote on Saturday.
