PROFILE: Silo Arts & Records
Silo Arts seems to fit the bill of a label that seems to be dripping in cultural cool. Being a Brisbane-based, outward looking label that’s pegged to Frenchkiss Records, the Silo Arts collective have managed to make a real mark since their start in 2011.
The likes of Rainbow Chan, ƒriendships, and Tincture lead the charge for Silo, creating a niche of young, curated electronic music that reaches beyond domestic ears. Tomorrow, they’ll be staging their unofficial Melbourne Music Week showcase at The Workers’ Club.
In the lead up to this, we asked label founder Hugh Francis to explain Silo’s deal:
Silo Arts started in 2011 as a little artist collective. We got a bunch of like minded Brisbane producers together and started doing some shows around town, and hosting some internationals. The exact birthday of Silo Arts is unknown, however it’s roughly September, around Bigsound. We started in 2011 as a little arts collective, doing gallery shows with a bunch of unknown producers. We were lucky enough to be discovered by the peeps at Frenchkiss when I was working for CMJ in New York City in 2012. Those guys are pretty close to the CMJ crew, and I guess someone mentioned that I was running a small label back home. They had a listen to our sampler, and sent us a contract within a week. For me, that’s point where I really got my head in the game – up until then it had been a DIY collective. That’s when we decided to really have a go at this whole label thing….
LOOK: Smith Street Band
The Smith Street Band played the zoo last Thursday w/ Joyce Manor, Cheap Girls & Seahorse Divorce. We sent along Brisbane based photographic artist Kale Munro to check it out. The report came back. It was good.
Shows on this tour are wrapping up so catch em this week:

LOOK: Cutters and Two Bright Lakes Present – MMW
With the vast expanse of the National Gallery of Victoria’s Great Hall transformed into a live music venue, the gems of Melbourne’s indie scene came out to play with the Gallery’s priceless collection. Featured as part of the Labels Series for Melbourne Music Week, the night showcased the best of the labels’ respective talent. With the neo-90s penchant of Two Bright Lakes, to the innovative electronica from Cutters Records, this was one hell of a variety night.
LOOK: Live Music Safari – MMW
For one night only, over 40 acts came together to perform for Melbourne Music Week’s Live Music Safari.
From the Toff to Prince’s own Bennetts Lane a slew of artists from the local Melbourne took centre stage, all for free.
Big ups to the team behind MMW for setting this up, not to mention giving Melbourne’s local music scene the spotlight it deserves.
This Thing – multi launch @ Phoenix Public in Pictures
‘This Thing’ launched a bunch of artist releases at the Phoenix Public House to a pumped up crowd of excited punters. A night of cool beats by a diverse group of producers floggin their wares and ripping up the house with five live sets. I caught four and they were very good.
