Dukes Of Windsor – ‘It’s A War’

Listen to

So they made their name thanks to a (vomit) TV Rock remix, but can Dukes of Windsor recreate that success on their own? Hmm…

‘It’s a War’ is the first taste of their new album. Sounds like they’re aiming squarely at the dance market, but it was produced by the same guys that helmed Refused’s seminal hardcore album The Shape of Punk to Come. Can you say “WTF?”

And does anyone else think that Jack Weaving sounds like Korn’s Jonathan Davis? I think it’s his vocals that turn me off a bit, plus their songs never seem to do anything all that exciting. This one’s OK, but doesn’t do all that much for me. Maybe it’ll grow on me the more I listen to it. There’s some nice melodies in parts, but I just wish it packed more of a dancefloor punch.

Yeah, I agree, it’s okay but nothing mindblowing. But I’ve gotta say, I really liked the TV Rock remix – TV Rock is usually rubbish but the remix brought out a kind of brutality in Jack’s voice that reminded me a little of John Lydon’s PIL stuff.

I’m also curious about what you think a dancefloor punch is – what in a song really hits that sweet spot that makes people dance?

I would have liked the chorus in particular to up the ante, giving the song that much-needed “punch” to get you moving. The song essentially maintains the same dynamic level throughout.

I definitely get where you’re coming from with the PIL reference though! I didn’t pick up on that originally, but it’s certainly there.

    hey guys,

great blog btw. i read it as often as i can. this song doesn’t suck but dukes of windsor generally fail to impress me, there’s something about them that’s kind of too safe to be hard hitting. it sounds like there could be a killer remix in there though, stay tuned i guess.

it’s interesting that they had the Refused production team, but not that surprising i suppose, “New Noise” is like one of the earliest examples of dance-punk (to use a very trendy buzz word) i can think of.

    peace

I think Dukes of Windsor’s sound is the new INXS. I was lucky enough to catch their show at The Annandale Hotel last week. These guys played to a packed house and I must say that this band is like nothing I have ever seen. They were remarkable, nothing short of amazing. I am tipping that these boys will be one of the biggest acts around in a few years. If the reviewer reads this I would be really interested to hear what you have to say about their new Triple J track “No Disguise”. Later.
