Nina May – ‘Monsters In The Dark’ (mp3)

Listen to

OK, so I have a bit of a confession to make.  I’m quite impartial to bands with female singers – hey I was in one myself – and yes, that does mean that I’m sometimes caught enjoying the odd tune by The Veronicas (they write catchy pop tunes, you gotta give them props for that).  But The Veronicas segue quite nicely into Nina May, because just like the Origliasso twins, Nina May are from Brisbane and they play pop music with distorted guitars as well.  Is it emo?  That’s one for you to argue amongst yourselves about..

But Nina May seem to align themselves more with the metal and alternative side of music, and it comes out in their riffs and song structures.  They remind me a lot of an unsigned band out of the States called Estrela, although I’m sure Nina May have never heard of them.  Nina May are just about to complete their debut EP and ‘Monsters In The Dark’ is the first taste of what’s to come.  It’s an extremely catchy tune, and if their popularity on MySpace is anything to go by, it seems as though a lot of people are digging this track.  I like vocalist Erinn Swan’s voice, although her lyrics leave a lot to be desired – you’ll find no deep and meaningful messages in here.  Aside from said track, the rest of the stuff on MySpace is poorly recorded demos and the songs don’t live up to the standard of ‘Monsters In The Dark’.  But it’s a solid start from a band who I think will appeal to a large audience looking for pop music with a bit of an edge to it.

Woah no… i think you hit it on the head with the ’emo’ tag. Still catchy as all hell, but the Veronicas are hotter. You were in a band with a kickass frontwoman ey…lucky boy!

nina may are brilliant live. you cant really judge a band until you have witnessed a live show. amazing. and erinns lyrics are meaningful. you just have to understand the point of view. its called creativity.

Firstly, what the hell??? they are awesome the demos are dodgey so making an assumption based on something that you can’t fully appreciate is just a load of crudapples and secondly monsters in the dark isn’t their best song so if that is pretty trucking good then that says a lot and you might notice that if you had paid attention. thirdly erinn has an awesome voice and there is nothing wrong with her lyric s just because there is a story that is trying to be put across but clearly no one is smart enough to realise. forthly to the idiot with the nickleback comment what the truck?? the music is a lot tougher than freaking nickleback you might notice that none of nina may’s songs sound anything alike and they are nothing like nickleback except that they are both bands with girl singers

You can say whatever you have to say, but I love every part of Nina may’s music. I’ll agree, the demos are a bit tacky compared to “Monsters In The Dark” but it’s because they are demos. I’ve heard completed versions of 2 other tracks. One of those tracks is “The Feeling.” I, for one, thought the demo was already amazing with Erinn’s opera bit but hearing the finished product was even better. Don’t shoot them out of the water yet. Yes, the lyrics aren’t as deep as they could be but hey, they came together less than a year ago and this is their first EP.

Thanks for writing the review, this is giving them a little more publicity.

Sorry if this or any other review seems to be jumping down your throat. We just want to enjoy the band the best you can.

    Nina may…

Ironic you compare them to The Veronicas, the vocalist Erinn Swan is best friends with Jess.

They’ve added quite a few songs on their profile since December, I recommend you check them out again. (Minus “The Feeling” Remix. Ugh, that was horrible.) I’d love to read another review.

I am not a fan of Nina May’s music. A lot of people only like them because of their association with those Veronica girls., that’s why they have so many people on their Myspace. There music is awkward to listen to and not very good.

Well Nina May wont sit still. They were recorded live for MTV at The Laird in Sydney October 25. They really rocked with their latest song “Crazy Insane”. Yes the tunes are catchy & they are also original, but if you don’t get the meaningful lyrics, dont admit to it because these guys are all university qualified artists, they’re not simpletons. So it really means you have not put in the brain power to get behind the upfront storiy lines. You have been warned …watch these guys they will be at the ARIAS before you can say “Nina May”

I know these guys and they are ALL seriously good artists/musicians. All they need now is some help in getting good quality demos out and…sky’s the limit. Nina May really do rock!
