Small Mercies – ‘Innocent’

I’m having one of those moments you sometimes get flying long-haul in economy class. Squished in with all those unwashed bogan freaks for so many hours, it becomes apparent that most people in this world are not like me. Most people in this world think that Sam Newman is pretty hilarious and that Kyle Sandilands in a credible judge of talent. ‘But don’t you see?’ I want to scream, ‘Kyle Sandilands is a no account fat head from commercial radio. He is, by definition, incapable of telling you what good music sounds like.’ But actually, plenty of people think that Kyle is worth listening to. He’s got his finger on the pulse, old frog-face. And he would probably give Small Mercies a hearty thumbs up. Because lord knows it’s time our country produced more bands that sound like they’re secretly Christian.

You fucking critics make me laugh… I would LOVE to hear your attempt at writing a song. Please email the mp3 to me and I will let you know what I think.

Small Mercies Christian???? WTF!!!! NO way are they anywhere close to that! Just because Steve (lead singer) can sing and the lyrics are tasteful does NOT mean they are like that!!! GEEEEEEEEE No wonder our bands don’t get alot of radio play with ppl like you saying things like this!!

  3. Melissa Rickards says:

WHAT the FUCK is WRONG with being a CHRISTIAN musician? Sounds like someone suggested your mum had sex with your father, but oh no she’d never do anything like THAT!!! Christianity is a lifestyle and music is a lifestyle and they’re not gonna be mutually exclusive but for fuck’s sake we’re not going to try and brain wash you with our hard core christian ideals. It’s NOT a big deal. Let them be, christian or not christian, does it truly matter…?

  4. Leonie says:

oh please you are touchy aren’t you on that Christian subject!! I’m annoyed that once ppl read comments like that they believe them and put them in that catergory. Nothing wrong with having christian values at all I’m just saying Small Merices aren’t that kind of band.

  5. Melissa says:

    My apologies,

I think I directed that toward something that Simon wrote, but it’s entirely possible that I overreacted to your response. In your defense, you make a good point. I didn’t recognise any Christian themes just by listening and I think that it is immature to lump them into the “Christian Music” scene just because they don’t appeal to someone who doesn’t like sitting on planes with bogan. I like Small Mercies, I think the singer Steve Blaik has an ambiguous voice, causing the same confusion that I initially encountered with the ‘boy’ band Hanson though it’s still a powerful voice, but their melodies, lyrics and instrumentals are very enjoyable.

If anyone reading this is from Brisbane then you can check these guys out at Rosies on the 25th of July 2008 or in Melbourne at Toff In Town on the 16th!!
Please go and support OZ bands!!

I absolutely believe Small Mercies is one band definitely to watch with raw crisp energy and music to play over and over again. I am in my mid 40’s and grew up appreciating Australian bands like Skyhooks, ACDC etc and they show all the qualities of a great band, watch them live and you’ll understand. Even the producer of the album Matt Wallace (from the US) see his body of work and which bands he works with, plus he thinks they’re great!!

Come out with us to...
