WATCH: Circular Keys – ‘Possessed’

Circular Keys’ new video for ‘Possessed’ is quite beautiful. I’ve recently loaded up my stuff in storage and I remember thinking how creepy it was walking down the isles of symmetrical doors. That shot is contrasted with strong characters, dreamy night scenes, a Shining-like hotel and cool live performances to make this video really successful. Especially compared to so many bad videos made this year – have you seen that flop by Battleships… yeesh. I caught Circular Keys playing live earlier this year and sadly, I remember thinking it was a bloody terrible show. ‘Possessed’ doesn’t sound like their live performance that night. This is how I imagined they could sound and together with a video which has been expertly illustrated by the creative direction of Anna Snoekstra has allowed the Circular Keys sound come to life.

WATCH: The Jungle Giants – ‘You’ve Got Something’

, , No Comment

Brisbane’s The Jungle Giants have a new video for their single ‘You’ve Got Something’. Taken from their current EP She’s A Riot, the video features my pet hate of shit being smashed then played in reverse but it’s actually a pretty good performance video and oh, it’s in black and white – which is cool. But forget all that. The Jungle Giants are probably one of the more underated bands of 2012. Really sweet pop. Way cooler than The Rubens. Vote for them in JJJ’s hottest 100, it’ll get you laid.

Sugar Mountain

, , No Comment

Sugar Mountain has released its second line-up, adding to an already bumper selection for the annual boutique festival. Held over multiple days in January 2013, the main event takes place at The Forum Theatre on Saturday 19 January, with additional sites at ACMI, Rooftop Bar and Polyester Records. We love this festival as you can tell by having featured all these bands before. Check it.

The latest additions include:

Melbourne super group Boomgates, who began as a couple of friends having a loose Thursday evening sing and strum on a couch in Melbourne. Since then they’ve played a bunch of shows, released three 7″ singles and their remarkable debut LP Double Natural.

Brothers Hand Mirror are Grant Jonathon Gronewold (HTML Flowers, Cougar Flashy) and Oscar Vincente Slorach-Thorn (Oscar Key Sung, Oscar & Martin); two Melbourne bros. Predominately using tape loops and fast mouth tricks, Brothers Hand Mirror are inspired by tattooing each other, making comic books and zines, friends, coffee and sunbeams.

Collarbones need no introduction. Their current record Die Young will surely make all the hip 2012 lists, look out for pop conventions amid swathes of experimental electronica and elegant r’n’b laden hooks.

Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer JONTI makes playful, dreamy electronica. He has spent countless hours studying records like they were books, processing each song and testing his theories on a four-track recorder. If you love music, eventually you meet others who do too.

Melbourne based synth outfit FORCES will collaborate with acclaimed choreographer ANTONY HAMILTON (Chunky Move, Australian Dance Theatre, Lucy Guerin). A ‘must see’ one-off performance, curated just for Sugar Mountain.

Finally, AH Cayley’s pick for heart break, Lower Plenty. A bunch of sweet dudes from bands including Dick Diver, Deaf Wish, The Focus, The UV Race. Heavy on the downer country, Lower Plenty sound like an outer suburban Go Betweens, or a Paul Kelly song where he doesn’t name-check Melbourne landmarks all the time. Their debut LP Hard Rubbish was released earlier this year on local label Special Award Records, and pays homage to divorce and the Australian outback.

Tickets for the 2013 Sugar Mountain Festival are on sale now via The Forum Box Office, Ticketmaster and Polyester Records.

LISTEN: Elizabeth Rose remixes ‘Turning’ by Chairlift

, , No Comment

I caught Elizabeth Rose at the Workers Club recently. It was a pretty full house but what was strange was that it was a fairly indie crowd. I say this because Rose wouldn’t seem out of place in a late night club show with kids in fluoro. I’m guessing that Rose prefers indie music herself though and she has managed to blur the lines between the dance/indie genre. But not in a presets kinda way, like many others. This is a fresh sound that suits what the authors of this remix, Brooklyn’s Chairlift, have been doing so well over the last few years. Rose toured with chairlift and obvioulsy left an impression and has now delivered a real treat by officially remixing their track ‘Turning’. She is a dynamo producer set for a huge 2013.

LISTEN: The Removalists – ‘Car Crash’

, , No Comment

The Removalists music is the creative spew of Liam, from the Ocean Party. He plays the tracks with some friends in a 3-piece that included our good buddy Curtis of Velcro (currently oveseas playing with Love Connection. ie living the dream). We’re looking forward to Liam possibly recording another EP over the festive season and then to start gigging again when Curtis returns.
Now to ‘Car Crash’, the stand-out from a split EP with Turvey Park, released earlier this year. I like the hook in this sound. Vocals swirl around a sweet guitar riff as Liam winds his way through a track not dissimilar to early Superchunk. It’s a nice change from the surf twang he plays on a lot of ocean party stuff. Good times.

LISTEN: Glass Towers – ‘Tonight’

I was sent this Glass Towers EP the other week and sat on it for a bit cause y’know… life. Anyho so what’s up with these dudes? – are they megastars yet or at least getting love on triple J? I hope so cause they sound pretty good. But please don’t call it tropical or jangly. Over those terms almost as much as epic which is closely followed by frothing – unless you’re from I OH YOU, cause then you probably are frothing!

Anyway, they come from Byron Bay, a place infested with hard-core, so this is a refreshing change. There is summer in their bones, which brings warmth mixed with youth, colliding with loose energy and good melody. Yep, we’re def hearing brit-pop. I reckon Glass Towers will do alright.

If you like this track – grab the EP Collarbone Jungle from iTunes.
