The Twerps – supported by Jonny Telafone – in Pictures

The Twerps

The Twerps packed out the GoodGod Small Club in Sydney on Sat and we had another new contributor Michael Perelini head down to capture the show. He described the support by Jonny Telafone as pretty wild and Jonny definitely left his mark of the crowd. The Twerps have just been listed for the Sound Summit in Newcastle which will be well worth checking out.

New War Album Launch In Pictures

, , No Comment

New War’s self-titled debut record was launched at the Northcote Social in Melbourne on the weekend. The LP has been released in Australia/NZ through Sensory Projects, and out Worldwide via US label Fast Weapons. ‘New War’ is also the first LP to be released on Polyester Records’ brand new vinyl pressing label. Their launch at the Northcote social was packed full and their set was as loud and intense as the recording. It’ll be a real shame if The Drones don’t put these guys on the ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ ATP line-up. We sent along our brand new contributor REBECCA CAPP to snap the show.

New Weird Australia – ‘Western Schism’

Leaving – ‘Days Apart’ (mp3)

‘Western Schism’ is part two of the geo-specific compilations put out by New Weird Australia. This one covers eighteen bands and artists from Perth in Western Australia. I’ll let New Weird Australia explain the compilation.

“The schism herein is as much geographical as it is artistic. These artists are outliers in both the literal and creative sense of the word – they celebrate their physical relationship with the world by amplifying it artistically. Distance need not be a tyranny – as is shown in this collection, it may in fact give us just the space we need to run free and get wild”.

I’ve come across a couple of these Perth-based artists but most are new to me. It’s great to gain exposure to new experimental work from WA so nice work New Weird. Check it out for yourself over on their site.

Skinny Jean – ‘Pulverem’ (mp3)

‘Pulverem’ is the colloquial expression Aussies use to express a desire to ‘destroy them’ when referring to the Brits at the Olympics. Nah, it’s not. I don’t know what it means. It’s probably Latin though yeah? ‘Pulverem’ is a dark, complex and catchy as fuck, taste of the forthcoming LP from Brisbane band Skinny Jean. It’s to be called:

Francolin – ‘If You’re On Fire’

Francolin – ‘If You’re On Fire’

Listen to

How bout this one? Vocals that make you wanna sing along with all your heart, catchy drum snaps and wonky gypsy guitar that conjures open fires and Devendra Banhart chillin with some free spirit babes. Now forgive me if you suffer from tall poppy syndrome and hate The Cat Empire but Francolin have managed to recreate that grass roots vibe of catchy party music that requires mandatory dancing, big smiles and happy times. Y’know, like before the Cat Empire played the footy show. It’s not just the trumpet break outs but the up-lifting mojo that Francolin have going on. ‘Hospital Song’ has been getting around and our Sounddoc bro covered it well so I’m plugging ‘If You’re On Fire’ as a prediction of what you’ll be talking about with that fuzzy feeling in your belly post live show.
