Jonathan Michell – ‘Mojave Night’ mp3

Listen to

Another great release from Special Award Records. This one came out earlier this year and features ten instrumental tracks by Jonathan Michell of ‘The Ancients, Mum Smokes and Breaking The Law’. This one is a gorgeous listen and reminds me of the noodling guitar work of early ‘Explosions in the Sky’. There is not quite the vastness I would expect given the press shot but it’s a pretty sweet title track. Could be a good choice for your purchase this weekend on Intl. Record Store Day. Leaks – EP ‘Twelve : Thirty Four’

Leaks – ‘Paper Train’ mp3

Listen to

Leaks is Tom Guida, a guy from Geelong in Victoria, who has just put out a 3 track ep called ‘Twelve : Thirty Four’ which you can buy for a buck on his bandcamp here – http://leaks.bandcamp.com/. There is plenty of bad Dubstep kicking about but Leaks manages to keep his style understated and somehow his lyrics really seem heartfelt and restrained despite his youth. I picked this up through a tip on our Facebook page and I’m pretty impressed but I’m curious to see how Leaks expands on this sound in coming releases and if he can develop a deeper more nuanced sound.

Cow Parade Cow – LP ‘Big Sky’

Cow Parade Cow – ‘The Road is Beautiful Again’ mp3

Listen to

Not sure about the key words – indie, pop, psych on their bandcamp but Cow Parade Cow is def fun time music from the far west. In the spirit of Passion Pit, all songs are written and produced by Mike Litton, apparently in his bedroom. There is a bunch of musicians who add to the recording and the result is pretty cool and easy to dance around too. It gets a bit weird at times, especially in ‘Theme From Big Sky’ but overall it’s well worth a listen and maybe even slinging them a few internet dollars. Pay what you like to download the ‘Big Sky’ long player here – http://cowparadecow.bandcamp.com/album/big-sky

Crumbs – LP ‘Maidenhair’

Crumbs – ‘Baby Thighs’ mp3

Listen to

In case you need a refresher, Crumbs is Melbourne guy Max Kohane. Matt has blogged on WTH about Crumbs’ past releases ‘pieces and portions Vol. 1 & 2’ and I’m guessing he’ll be loving that Crumbs has delivered on the “fully realised” full length record, titled ‘Maidenhair’. Released on Sensory Projects this Friday, 20th April and set for a future vinyl release as well, ‘Maidenhair’ is a completely new set of beats with ‘Baby Thighs’ the first taste… hmm that sentence doesn’t sound right. Anyho, we posted the curious video for another track off ‘Maidenhair’ called ‘Love Snack‘ yesterday, so check it out too.

RüFüS – at the Phoenix Public Bar – Photos

RüFüS - copyright david payne 2012

RüFüS put on one hellava show at the Phoenix Public Bar. I posted the video for their single ‘This Summer’ last week and got along to see how they do live. Very well it turns out and the charisma of the boys on stage was not lost on the gushing, mostly female, audience. The obvious comparison falls with the Presets but I think these guys lean a little more towards Miami Horror on stage. Either way they are super fun, so be sure to catch em when you can.

New ep out now! Details on their band page here – http://www.facebook.com/rufussounds

MY DISCO – Australia Asia Tour – Photos

my disco copyright david payne 2012

MY DISCO played a couple of shows, as part of their Australia Asia tour, at The Toff in Town on the weekend. They were in fine form and it was a real treat to hear stuff from ‘Little Joy’ with a mix of old tracks and possibly one new track too. Someone might confirm that? So yeah it was quite an intense experience with the usual ear bleeding levels but with a twist of near darkness but for a few lazers and blistering strobe screaming through constant fog machines pumping right in our faces and my camera. I would almost get a clear shot then puff, fog to the face. The impact of all this was actually a total sensory distortion – you couldn’t really see, all you could smell was the foggy mist and we were submerged in deep pulsing MY DISCO throb. It was pretty good. More pictures after the jump.
