The Fearless Vampire Killers – 'For You & Me' (video)

, , No Comment

Kebabs, cameraderie, compact vehicles and general shenanigans from Melb’s Fearless Vampire Killers. The clip was directed by Timothy Melville who’s previously done videos for Wilfred Jackal and Big Scary. There’s a handful of other cool short films on his vimeo profile that have scooped up a bucket of awards – ‘The Laundromat’ in particular is worth a watch.

‘For You & Me’ is off the band’s debut which will be released mid 2011.

Whyte Fang – ‘Thy New Sound’ (mp3)

Listen to

Whyte Fang is a one woman show from Sydney who makes beats via her iPhone. While she’s keeping her name under wraps for now, the incognito thing will probably go on to irritate more/won’t last for much longer because this ain’t the type of tune to sit stagnant in the blogosphere.

BAM factor happens at the 0:25 mark when the track erupts into a multi-tiered cacophony of warbly chanting, big beats and choppy samples, kinda like Fever Ray doing backflips with the cast of Bring It On.

Fierce tune.

Red Riders Announce Split

, , No Comment

Maaaan. After eight years, two albums and a decent clock up of touring mileage, Red Riders have decided to call it a day.

A statement on the band’s blog reads:

“Rather than grind something that’s special to us into the ground, we’d like to call it quits while we can we can still stand proudly behind everything that we’ve made together.

Basically, to anyone who’s ever given a damn, thank you! We’re gonna keep making music in other guises so keep a ear out, and if you see us at the pub, or lurking up the back of a show someplace, come say hi. We can grab a beer.

Big love,
RR’

Farewell shows in Sydney and Melbourne will be announced soon, but for now you can catch the guys on the road with Children Collide on their current tour.

And for the better of it…

Pear Shape – ‘Staring Competition’ (mp3)

Listen to

The only info I could dredge up about these guys is that they’re a four piece from Sydney who have a thing for overzealous seasonal fruit references. This tune is very Vamp Weekend, and I wasn’t really bothered for another invite to the chino+deck shoes bourgeois on first listen. Says I. A week later, it’s lodged itself into my subconscious and probably won’t exit until another twee indie pop group decides to eat away at free matter in my brain.

Lyrical nonchalance is flailing around in the air here but Riordan has the whole wandering Ezra Koenig vox thing going on, which will probably appeal to anyone who’s jumped on that bandwagon (Cloud Control loyals take note). Crunchy riffs, fun pop contours and a song about freshmans watching SBS and doing body shots can’t be too harmful, really. Kind of like those annoying college kids who find it necessary to petition their cause in the middle of the footpath, it takes a few beats over the head with the clipboard before I eventually give in.

Pear Shape are playing Oxford Arts Factory with Guerre, Boats of Berlin & Fjords on May 5th.

Amaya Laucirica – 'Sleeping In Your Shadow' (video)

, , No Comment

Making dimly lit videos of chicks wandering through sparse forest seems to be Adam Harding’s forte (see also here, here and here).

The clip was shot over two nights at ‘Camel’s Hump’ in Mount Macedon, Victoria with Melbourne photographer Ben Butcher assisting on lighting.

Amaya’s on the road with Adalita over the next few months, click here for the full run of dates.
