LISTEN: Red Aces – ‘The End’

, , No Comment

Red Aces are four brothers from Coburg, Victoria. I reckon they should marry four sisters and live on a farm. Pretty fiery track from the suburbs of Melbourne. It’s a straight-forward Australian ‘Blueline Medic’ sound with a wall of guitar noise and plenty of grunt. Defs want to see these boys play at the Workers Club on the 21 Sept with Iowa and Lost Weekend. Good times.

LISTEN: New Gods – ‘On Your Side’

New Gods is the band that Dominic Byrne and Adrian Beltrame from Little Red have found happier times in. A subtle line in their bio suggests they are ready to move on; so together with Richard Bradbeer on bass (Eagle and The Worm), Sam Raines on drums, and Dale Packard on keys (Ground Components) they have formed a sonic-prog, dance-rock, indie-pop band. I throw all these terms at this band because there is a lot packed into ‘On You Side’. Clearly these guys are a talented group and ‘On Your Side’ has a very accomplished sound for a first single even if it is kinda over cooked. I really dig the Richard Marx-like passion but maybe strip it right back and be more unashamedly pop…y’know, get mullets and some stone-washed denim jackets, that kinda thing.

New Gods are touring with The Rubens:

THU 13 SEPTEMBER – The Loft, Warnambool

FRI 14 SEPTEMBER – Bended Elbow, Geelong

SAT 15 SEPTEMBER – Forum Theatre, Melbourne

THU 20 SEPTEMBER – Uni Bar, Wollongong

FRI 21 SEPTEMBER – Metro Theatre, Sydney

THU 27 SEPTEMBER – Republic Bar, Hobart

FRI 5 OCTOBER – Capitol Theatre, Perth

SUN 7 OCTOBER – Newport Hotel, Fremantle

WED 10 OCTOBER – Hoey Moey, Coffs Harbour

THU 11 OCTOBER – Coolangatta Hotel, Gold Coast

FRI 12 OCTOBER – Hi-Fi, Brisbane

LISTEN: Do The Robot – ‘La Rondette’

, , No Comment

Do The Robot are Matt and Sarah Deasy, a Brisbane husband & wife duo who have spent years perfecting their brand of ambient shoegaze pop. ‘La Rondette’ is no exception; gentle keyboard notes float by from what feels like a million miles away, while the stuttering beats crack and echo in the foreground. At times the track feels cold and sparse, but it still draws you in with lush atmospherics. I don’t have a clue what Sarah Deasy is singing about, but a feeling of longing and isolation comes through loud and clear in her soft, wistful vocals. This is an understated but beautiful track, and I especially like the way the band haven’t sacrificed subtlety for empty drama.

Do The Robot release their new album Midnight Mirage later this month.

SEQUENCE: Kite Club @ Sing Sing Studios

, , No Comment

Kite Club (Nicholas Futcher) is currently in the midst of recording his debut record, so we recently got down to Richmond’s hallowed Sing Sing Studios to shoot the band laying down some tracks. Futcher and the band have been plugging away with Jean-Paul Fung (of Jinja Safari/Last Dinosaurs fame). If this session was anything to go by, expect big things from Kite Club come release date.
