Jimmy Hawk & The Endless Party – 'Liberty Sunset Blue' Album Stream

, , No Comment

Here’s an exclusive stream of the latest release from Jimmy Hawk & The Endless Party, ‘Liberty Sunset Blue’. The album sounds like it’s been named after a betting horse, but from the get go of those cruisy hooks on ‘Heavy Feeling’ and the sunny jangle of ‘Meet Me At The Party’ to all the Abbey Road nods on ‘Taking a Ride Downtown’ – you’ll find all this downplayed do-wop becomes quite endearing very quickly.

Catch Jimmy Hawk & The Endless Party launch the LP on June 30th at The Toff with Gosteleradio and Brave Face.

‘Liberty Sunset Blue’ – Recorded in Los Angeles at Lone Palm Studios with Dan Horne (Ben Kweller, Beachwood Sparks, Frausdots) with additional tracks by Nao Anzai (Damo Suzuk) and Jim White.
Mastered by Peter Mew (David Bowie, Syd Barrett, Donovan) at Abbey Road, UK.

YouTube Preview Image

This is quite simply a beautifully shot video of a little story in the Kimberley region of Australia’s north west. Incredible colour and vast landscapes explored through the tale of a couple of kids hoping to fly away. Love to know how they got the aerial car shot – chopper on an indie budget?

You know I love credits so here goes, Writer/Director: Joshua Bowyer and DOP: Mark Zagar. Produced by Jamie Kuzich, assistant producer: Kate Jones. 1st AD: Brad Holyoake, Camera Assist: Rebecca Crowe, Costumes: Emma Bergmier, Editor: Joshua Bowyer, Colourist/VFX: Sandy Sutherland.

International Space Time Concerto Competition

, , No Comment

The International Space Time Concerto is running a competition with a total prize pool of $50,000. The competition is offering a shot for 6 finalists to perform with an accompanying orchestra at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music Concert Hall in late 2012. Sounds very Kanye. Plus another 2 finalists will collaborate with an international internet-linked ensemble from five countries. Yeah that’s not weird at all, project manager Tracy Redhead says this is all about “the music industry embracing new technology and change.”

The parts that I reckon y’all wanna check is A. No entry fee and B. The innovative section that is seeking sound artists and digital media artists to present an original piece or remix/recontextualise an existing Concerto. You could even remix a live orchestra. So beat makers, remixers, sound designers and experimental artists can step up and collaborate with the University of Newcastle.

How do you do it? First, you submit a proposal – show reel, then get selected, travel to Newcastle, rehearse and possibly perform for an international audience. These peeps are also talking about projecting work on buildings in Newcastle during the internet broadcast. It is all very interesting and definitely outside regular opportunities for artists.

For entries go here – http://www.spacetimeconcerto.com and for facebook here – http://www.facebook.com/spacetimeconcerto

Galapagoose – ‘Rhizome’

Galapagoose – ‘Rhizome’ (mp3)

Taken from the recently released album Commitments, ‘Rhizome’ is a gorgeous track from Galapagoose. I really dig the way he swallows up the vocals in a soaring wall of sound. The organ break beats and Portishead like machine-gun blips are killer. His work is everywhere at the moment. Remixing Young Magic with Wooshie, making videos and playing plenty of shows.

Neda – ‘Dream of Flying’ (Thrupence Remix)

Listen to
(mp3)
Local wonderboy Thrupence has done a brilliant job of remixing this track from new singer/songwriter Neda. Since relocating to Melbourne from WA, Tenielle Neda’s been working with a whole lot of notable people – Andy Bull, Tim Derricourt (Dappled Cities) and Lisa Miller. Adrian Deutsch (Red Riders) produced her upcoming release and Lasse Marten (Lykki Li, Peter Bjorn & John) mixed the EP.

For fear of rolling out names like a presser, that’s probably enough background info for you to gauge right now. Beyond the roll call though; there’s many understated moments in this track where those glorious vocals drift in and out like weather patterns. Or even Sarah Mc Lachlan prancing around in a candle lit lounge suite (in slow motion). While that description is more inflight brochure than blog, it’s not too far from the truth, and if anything – probably closer to the midweek daydream you’re pining for.

Velcro – ‘One Day’

Velcro – ‘One Day’ (mp3)

Why Don’t You Believe Me? released a live cassette by Velcro at the Gasometer in Melbs on Friday night. The very limited tape includes two bonus home-recorded tracks and was mixed and mastered by Astral Traveller. ‘One Day’ is another moody slice of drama from the intoxicating Velcro. Guitar strumming his way through a journey of melancholy and innocent love, Velcro delivers some gentle indie pop rather then beats this time round. The Velcro band are playing The Liberty Social in Melbourne this Thursday and a solo thang at the Tote on Saturday.

Snakadaktal – ‘Dance Bear’

Snakadaktal – Dance Bear by iohyouparty

‘Dance Bear’ is Snakadaktal’s red hot new release. When a single like this ‘drops’ every hip blog orgasms cause this kind of youth, beauty and talent = hits! Those frothing maniacs at IOHYOU aren’t looking back as they continue to nurture cool bands and Snakadaktal have delivered for them with ‘Dance Bear’. I am never cynical about a band like this because you can’t fake something that sounds this fresh in our clogged-up indie world. There is an honesty to this sound and I dig the passion in the vocals. Be prepared to hear all kinds of “best …” for this one.
