WATCH: Single Twin – ‘My Silken Tooth’

‘My Silken Tooth is taken from the debut album ‘Marcus Teague’ by Single Twin and the video is directed by the damn fine Melbourne-based photographer Leah Robertson. Leah’s coverage of music festivals has pretty much set the tone for what you now see every year coming back from Meredith etc. It is with that eye that crowds are recorded in contrast to a solitary figure of Single Twin, standing in darkness lit only by a flickering strobe.

There is a beautiful calmness to ‘My Silken Tooth’ and Leah has done well to play with the light falling around people to add further depth to the single. The shock of daylight is harder to reconcile but perhaps it reflects another dimension in the mind of his thoughts. Either way it’s a great track and worth revisiting on his bandcamp. There are two Single Twin records, which can be downloaded for free here.

The video for ‘My Silken Tooth’ will also be on display at the National Gallery of Victoria as part of the exhibition Wired for Melbourne Sound running Sep 28 – Oct 27, 2013.

WATCH: Lime Cordial – ‘Sleeping At Your Door’

New video from Lime Cordial for the single ‘Sleeping At Your Door’ lifted from their sweet EP Falling Up The Stairs released last week. Lime Cordial are spunky brothers Oli and Louis Leimback with help from James Jennings on awesome drums, Brendan Champion play’n Bone and Tim Fitz on Keys/Guitar. Their brand new EP Falling Up The Stairs is a real catchy, melodic, tingly, and cheeky collection of tracks. We could lob them into a North Sydney tropical sound (Holiday’s) or more rhythmic hippiness (Jinja Safari) but I reckon they’ve got a slicker, surfier vibe. It’s sunny pop with good vocals and neat song-writing. The EP has a lot going on and the production is impressive. The boys are on tour with UK friends Cosmo Jarvis, following a few local shows.

The video kinda does have a Wes Anderson feel (thanks youtube commentator) in the zooms and saturated colour but really it’s just a band playing on a barge. But it should get the girls/boys going and it’s a good track. Oh and I like the tinny cruising past.

INTRODUCING: San Mei

, , No Comment

San Mei Sk8 (1)

San Mei is the bedroom project for Gold Coast based Emily Hamilton. Sunshine, skateboarding and shiny melodies sung over drum-rolls and synth treats, layered with fresh production skills all sounding breezy yet dramatic. What an opening 15 seconds. The hope of youth. The love of helpless naivety. Such longing. And then heart on sleeve melody. This is why I dig on pop music and if our ed. Mel wasn’t so edgy; she would too. San Mei lifts the pop tones on brighter to um, ahem… a brighter place?

‘Brighter’ is San Mei’s first official release following on from some earlier web posts. Recorded at home and then fine tuned at Little Pink studios to hone the vocal production. London label Tidal Wave will pimp the digital single on September 16th so get on it. hashtag Brighter.

LISTEN: HDSPNS – ‘Awa’

HDSPNS

We picked up HDSPNS on Love Thy Neighbour a while back. This is a new track ‘Awa’. I thought we’d sling it out there in anticipation of their sophomore EP VIVIDISIM, released on September 4th.

Parallels with the Foals are obvious but it’s the hard working feel of a much rougher band like the Mark of Cain, that I like. Drumming that drills into you brain carrying a payload of hooky lyrics, which are stitched up with tingling guitar notes. Let’s get them over to Oz cause they would be sick-as live but for now catch them over in NZ:

7th September – Auckland @ Number 4 Cross Street.

21st September – Christchurch @ Darkroom.

with Wellington and Tauranga shows TBA.

LISTEN: Elizabeth Rose – ‘The Good Life’

, , No Comment

rose

‘The Good Life’ opens with dark sounds suited to A Clockwork Orange but quickly bounces back to dance-pop and Rose’s very high-level production. Writing of her aspiration to leave the family home and start searching the world for her own piece of the elusive ‘Good Life’, this track is as catchy as any dance party anthem but somewhat understated by Rose’s reserved indie vocals. Mastered in London with award winning engineer Matt Colton (James Blake, Coldplay… what??), ‘The Good Life’ follows her awesome debut EP in 2012, Crystallise.

Get along to one of her spectacular live shows at Bigsound or the OutsideIn Festival:

Wednesday 11 September – Bigsound, Brisbane

Thursday 12 September – Bigsound Showcase at Bakery Lane, Brisbane

Saturday 21 September – OutsideIn Festival, Sydney
