Neda – ‘Dream of Flying’ (Thrupence Remix)

Listen to

Local wonderboy Thrupence has done a brilliant job of remixing this track from new singer/songwriter Neda. Since relocating to Melbourne from WA, Tenielle Neda’s been working with a whole lot of notable people – Andy Bull, Tim Derricourt (Dappled Cities) and Lisa Miller. Adrian Deutsch (Red Riders) produced her upcoming release and Lasse Marten (Lykki Li, Peter Bjorn & John) mixed the EP.

For fear of rolling out names like a presser, that’s probably enough background info for you to gauge right now. Beyond the roll call though; there’s many understated moments in this track where those glorious vocals drift in and out like weather patterns. Or even Sarah Mc Lachlan prancing around in a candle lit lounge suite (in slow motion). While that description is more inflight brochure than blog, it’s not too far from the truth, and if anything – probably closer to the midweek daydream you’re pining for.

Velcro – ‘One Day’ (mp3)

Why Don’t You Believe Me? released a live cassette by Velcro at the Gasometer in Melbs on Friday night. The very limited tape includes two bonus home-recorded tracks and was mixed and mastered by Astral Traveller. ‘One Day’ is another moody slice of drama from the intoxicating Velcro. Guitar strumming his way through a journey of melancholy and innocent love, Velcro delivers some gentle indie pop rather then beats this time round. The Velcro band are playing The Liberty Social in Melbourne this Thursday and a solo thang at the Tote on Saturday.

Snakadaktal – Dance Bear by iohyouparty

‘Dance Bear’ is Snakadaktal’s red hot new release. When a single like this ‘drops’ every hip blog orgasms cause this kind of youth, beauty and talent = hits! Those frothing maniacs at IOHYOU aren’t looking back as they continue to nurture cool bands and Snakadaktal have delivered for them with ‘Dance Bear’. I am never cynical about a band like this because you can’t fake something that sounds this fresh in our clogged-up indie world. There is an honesty to this sound and I dig the passion in the vocals. Be prepared to hear all kinds of “best …” for this one.

Love Connection – ‘You Don’t Need Muscles To Get Love’

Another track taken from the recently new album, ‘Euphoria’. You know that record with the artwork of the year by Karl Scullin. This one has dreamy animation by Ben Montero and was composited and edited by Rosie Adams. Love Connection keep doing everything right and this is quite simply a really sweet song amongst many on the record.

Battleships – ‘Your Words’ (mp3)

The battleships presser talks about a band that comes along every now and then, with the sound of something fresh and promising. Sydney band Battleships know folks love that shit. The truth is they’ve just picked up where Art of Fighting and Sparkadia left off but I’m sure they’ll continue to receive plenty of radio airplay. It’s the follow up to ‘In Retrospect’ that I’m plugging. ‘Your Words’ has an authentic sound of building drums and guitar, sweet vocals and the emotion of love and hope that makes you feel… something. Sharpen up the grooming and get a band pic that doesn’t look like someone lost their keys and I’m sure they’ll build as much hype as Cloud Control.

‘Fathers’

It’s difficult to write a release off as ‘sexy’ when there’s a fetching mug of Freud staring back at you from the cover. Anyway, The Go Roll Your Bones have snatched the primal rib from Kiss Reid’s side and grinded it down to make their morning coffee. It’s no surprise that Wade Keirghan who’s done duties for The Scare and Wolf & Cub was behind the mixing wheel for this one. Nevertheless, I’m just happy to welcome back some decent psych-prog back to the yard.

First track ‘Fathers’ kicks off thrusting bass-in-your-face and heavy petting vocalesque. ‘I Don’t Care’ wails ‘I’ve been used as a dishrag, used as a mop’, but for all that bluesy lamenting, it’s about as saccharine as a murder ballad. This EP smells like twelve minutes of bourbon stained velvet carpet and last night’s ashtray. A good dose of R ‘n’ R, with dare I say the word, SWAG. Give this a listen.
