I, A Man – ‘The Scenic Route’

Listen to
(mp3)

Stuff that lands in my inbox can be put into a few squares – hype bands, school bands, post break-up lead vocalists trying to make it solo, femme fatales donning peter pan collars or other feathery nonsense around their necks, DJs (everyone), MIDI chompers (everyone). Then there are bands like these guys, who make familiar things sound almost better than the originals.  But after listening to this track…are these guys Motor Ace or what? Not going to slip away all work of their accord (go over and enjoy the awesome drumming on previous EP Fiften Thirty Three here) but I hope they’ll appreciate the comparison. Perhaps that’s just some melancholy on my part pining for consecutive years from 2002 to 2005, but those were good years for Australian music. Anyway, all that melodic ambience and tangled up rhythm guitar catches me easily – so this track is top notch (by association) for me.

The guys are heading out on the road next month. Be sure to get along to one of their shows below:

Castratii – ‘Others’

Castratii – ‘Others’ (mp3)

‘Others’ is the B-side from the Kingdom single by Castratii. Oh yeah, Castratii hey. Who the fuck are they? Just some very talented weirdos that live in a cave in the Blue Mountains, occasionally sacrificing lost European bush walkers to the gods of dark industrial post metal emo rock in between cutting sick tracks like this one. Oh… yeah, those Castratii dudes.

Their album ‘Eora’ is out next month. Watch this space – http://www.facebook.com/Castratii

The Falls – ‘Home’

I’ve refused to post the new video from Emma Louise because it looks like it was sponsored by a tobacco company and it’s a boring, literal interpretation of the lyrics. The video for The Falls’ new single ‘Home’ has been directed by Johnny Welch and shot by DOP Tim Glastonbury. The beauty of this video is the far more subtle narrative to suit a lovely pop-folk track. It features a young family sharing time together in a creepy house. Oh yeah, I think some of them are dead. And maybe drink blood. Cool.

They have their own website too. Great picture by McLean Stephenson here – http://www.musicfromthefalls.com/look.html

The Flower Drums – ‘Outside The Province’ (mp3)

‘Outside The Province’ is a teaser from the forth coming Ep Suburban Wilderness by The Flower Drums. This is the wholesome 60’s rock I expect from Perth at the mo. These guys are doing it well and have a nice laid back, beer-garden sunshine thang going on. It’s less ‘far out’ and more middle of the road but hey, that didn’t slow down Powderfinger’s popularity. I’m keen to hear the rest of the Ep and hope to see these guys tour the east coast soon.

Deez – ‘missinU’

Deez – ‘missinU’ (mp3)

Deez is a fresh Melbourne beats-producer guy that is putting out free shit through his BandCamp, the latest of which is ‘missinU’. This track broodingly builds atmosphere then drops with a sampled vocal and loose glitchy flow. It’s catchy stuff but the hint of James Blake could be stronger, making the overall track darker thus delivering on the mood of the intro.

Def worth checking out a bunch of Deez here – http://deeez.bandcamp.com/
