Epidemic Over – ‘Runaway’ (mp3)

Listen to

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – regional areas are a haven and a breeding ground for people who love and make heavy music. Whether it’s Bundaberg’s DZ Deathrays (I know you’re trying to deny your Fraser Coast heritage boys, but I’m onto you) or Byron Bay juggernaut Parkway Drive, heavy music settles between the red and country-music loving centre, and the more refined capital cities.

Epidemic Over come from Tannum Sands on the central Queensland coast, and have spent the better part of the last five years on the road. Their latest EP, aptly titled Long Way Home, was recorded in the small central Queensland town of Mount Morgan – once  home to the most profitable mine in the world. THE WORLD.

These days Mount Morgan is kind of central Queensland’s version of Deliverance. The water supply is poisoned (thanks mining!) and on one occasion I saw a woman with boobs down to her knees chain smoke an entire packet of cigarettes as her toddler played in a full wheelie bin in the main street.

Oddly enough no-one wants to go there, so the boys managed to find a cheap house and knuckled down to record the EP. The locals accepted them and as far as I know, there were no rapes or banjos.
‘Runaway’s the latest single and a definite musical highlight. As they say in central Queensland, “GET IT UP YA!”

Bitch Prefect – ‘Bad Decisions’.

A friend of mine was called a Stuck-up Prefect the other day, mostly cause she is pretty but they could’ve gone with Bitch Prefect, it would’ve been way cooler. ‘Bad Decisions’ has been kicking around the internet for a while but it now has a video. Directed by Scott O’hara and shot/edited by Pat Telfer, it will be the first Single off their upcoming record ‘Big Time’, released on Bedroom Suck Records according to the notes on vimeo.

Velcro – ‘Inadequate Lover’ mp3

Listen to

Hmm, I really didn’t want to like this ep actually. The droning nasal vocals sound like that British punk spoken word style that one might easily write off as trendy drivel but I couldn’t cut it off. I played the ep twice over to check that I wasn’t crazy and it was even better the second time. It’s obviously Velcro’s music making sensibility that draws you in, with subtle and gorgeous tones of vintage keys, he pumps and beats like it’s a sleazy back alley sex romp.

Stream the cassette here – Hard Rubbish by Lower Plenty

Lower Plenty will release this long player through Special Award records on the 15 April 2012, it’s pretty good and doesn’t sound like the other bands that the members originate from. It’s got a nice eerie folk sound that you should probably just have a listen to. Follow the label for the official release here – http://www.specialawardrecords.com/

Ned Collette & Wirewalker – ‘Happy Heart’ mp3

Listen to

Ned Collette and Wirewalker have their second album ‘2’, set for release on 11 May 2012 through Dot Dash/Remote Control records. It’s been two years since their farewell show that WTH covered before they headed off to Berlin, the land of hopes and dreams for Melbourne indie musicians. I haven’t heard the entire record but I do like this short and understated single. Keep an eye out for local shows soon here – http://www.nedcollette.com/

Perth – LP ‘Babes, Water, Waves’

Perth – ‘White Glasgow’ mp3

Listen to

I linked the opening track from Perth’s debut LP ‘Babes, Water, Waves’ but I would’ve been happy to post any track. There are really sweet sounds being made over in the WA and this is another fine example. It’s an ambient sound that develops into beats and then mild psych pop and back again. The vocals are distant and sparse and the feel is desolate and shoe gazey. ‘Boy’ is a whole other thing with its ambient ‘Aphex Twin’ influenced vibe that leads you into another dimension of Perth. This is a record to zone out to and probably one that will grow with multiple listens. I’m glad these guys finally got this released and let’s hope they tour the rest of the nation.
