WATCH: Sunbeam Sound Machine – ‘Wandering, I’

, , No Comment

Sunbeam Sound Machine, the moniker of melodic psych wunderkind and WTH favourite Nick Sowersby returns to our attention with an overwhelmingly colourful video for ‘Wandering, I’.

The track’s moody tone is countered by footage washed in over-saturated sherbet pink and green. Sowersby’s glowering mug and performance footage invites us into his hazy musings, presented with VHS warping and pulsating between frames of static. A beautiful, brief piece of mind-manifesting pop which may evoke repressed 90s memories of popping your favourite tape in the VCR only to realise its been ravaged and rendered useless by time. And Disney told you that only happened to pirates….

‘Wandering, I’ features on SSM’s album Wonderer, available both digitally and for vinyl order from Bandcamp.

Sunbeam Sound Machine did the Melbourne to Sydney run last week, playing a show and stopping over at FBi Radio on the way. Lachlan, their drummer is handy with a cam and took some snaps for us. The band have been busy working on their debut album which lead vocalist Nick Sowersby received an Australia Council recording grant for.

Sunbeam Sound Machine are playing their first headline show in a year tonight at Shebeen in Melbourne, with supports from I, A ManHollow Everdaze & Chips Callipso. Tickets are available here.

The band’s debut LP Wonderer is out in November through Dot Dash / Remote Control.

INTRODUCING: Rabble Rouser

Rabble Rouser

When a band emails you claiming they sound like Grinderman and Television, you take everything at a half-truth really. Melbourne’s Rabble Rouser aren’t quite crude, doom-slaying middle agers just yet (truly, no is quite as frightening as Warren Ellis in my mind anyway). On their split double A side featuring ‘I’m a Human Blues’, So Damn Tired’ and the blunt, 43 second ‘Wicked Chair’, the band sway from grovelling noise punk to tender, square-eyed pop like some kind of bipolar Tom Verlaine.

Rabble Rouser aren’t just a bunch of surf chumps fiddling around the psych-punk circuit though. As soon as that speckled treble guitar emerges from catacomb of an intro in ‘I’m A Human Blues’, Nick Allbrook’s soul takes flight with the wind – and in a moment of tenderness and absolute chaos, all seems all and right with the world. The guys are currently recording a five track EP in Blairgowrie to be released in the coming months. For now, catch I’m a Human Blues // So Damn Tired as a free download at Rabble Rouser’s bandcamp.

LISTEN: Sunbeam Sound Machine – ‘Cosmic Love Affair’

sunbeam-sound-machine

Sunbeam Sound Machine is Nick Sowersby, a young guy who’s been playing in bands around Melbourne since he was in short trousers. His debut release, double EP One/Sunbeam Sound Machine, is coming out through Dot Dash/Remote Control Records on 29 November.

First single ‘Cosmic Love Affair’ is psychedelic pop in the original sense – woozy and detached, it gives you the odd sensation of having stepped into someone else’s waking dream. The song staggers along, half asleep, as Sowersby’s multi-tracked vocal floats in: ‘Everyone changed / I stayed the same / Everything’s gonna be different from now’. Escapist and dissociative, this is sure to provide some lovely summertime listening.
