Eskimo Joe – ‘Foreign Land’

Listen to

In the ten years since “Sweater” made the Triple J Hottest 100, Eskimo Joe have surprised many by making some of the most intelligent rock music to come out of Australia. The band have hit the sweet spot with “Foreign Land”, blending post-Coldplay modern rock with Arabian instrumentation in a way that isn’t as pretentious as it sounds. Really.

New album Inshalla is out on May 29.

Of all the things this song reminds me of, “Kashmir” is not one of them. I understand where you’re coming from, but the main music building blocks of that song and this one are not similar.

Man, are you guys gonna keep offering up the tidbits that major label press releases spew forth everyday? There are heaps of exciting bands around Australia that haven’t got a look in here. I doubt many people are gonna ask “who the hell is Eskimo Joe”.

I’d really prefer that this were a joke post. But, no, here’s the site momentarily forgetting its credibility by acknowledging among the most flaccid of Australia’s commercial rock bores. Sure, the band have a place, but I don’t think it’s here.

Also, what is up with that Bulls On Parade guitar lick? At 3.55

Andrew, take a look at the right-hand side of the site at the most-read and most-commented posts. Airbourne, Jet, The Galvatrons, Gabriella Cilmi and The Veronicas feature there. This is a place for Australian music, and yes, we do try to showcase a lot of unknown talent as well as more established acts.

Man some of you guys are douchebags. People need to start supporting australian pop-rock music with pride before we all end up with flabby/forgetabble indie music everywhere.

This song is great. There’s a reason why it sells.

    Douchebags? Nice one. Name calling.

Sophie, using the statistics to argue that those artists deserve coverage isn’t very convincing. None of those artists are lacking in press elsewhere. I’ve noticed of late that this site has steered away from covering new bands into the simple ‘one-post-per-day cross-media content’ mode of operation: no real insight, nothing exciting, just film clips, streaming mp3s etc and some cursory words.

It could be an exciting blog if you guys tried to say something original and stopped fawning over everything. I’d keep coming back then.

who the hell are eskimo joe?
i agree with james, i hear kashmir, and by extension, RATM’s ‘Wake Up’ in the Middle 16 of this.
Doesn’t stop it from kicking ass, though.

Dear Joe Blow (if indeed, that IS your real name),
I understand the point you are making and maybe we are going a little heavy on the commercial video posts. However, I do think we (Matt especially) do cover a great deal of bands that don’t get much exposure otherwise.
Other than that issue, what exactly are you looking for in our copy? Critical discourse perhaps? I don’t have the time to waste writing blog posts on the Internet about bands I don’t like when I could spend that time and effort sharing something I do enjoy with others who may or may not enjoy it too.

Some of you guys are taking the internet and music WAY too seriously. Log off and read a book.

Well, yeah. As a matter of fact I do take music very seriously. If you don’t, then I struggle to see why you’d contribute to a blog about music.

“Eskimo Joe have surprised many by making some of the most intelligent rock music to come out of Australia” = the funniest thing I read in ages.

“Some of you guys are taking the internet and music WAY too seriously. Log off and read a book” = You are the Courier Mail’s BrizBands’ Candi Vegas and I claim my $5

Far out! Intensity in the comments here!

You guys who goto the effort of bagging out a successful band are kind of pathetic. Remember this band have been around for a good ten years or so!

Everyone starts somewhere. You can either sell out or give up, right? I don’t think they’ve sold out, but let me guess, that’s probably the reason you dislike or would like to bag out any band like Eskimo Joe!

Who are your favourite bands? Are you going to start disliking the moment they rake in the dosh from top songs such as “Foreign Land”?

I’d agree with Sophie! Log off!
