INTRODUCING: Readable Graffiti

Readable Graffiti

Melbourne three-piece, Readable Graffiti, have been quiet as of late in terms of new material, since dropping their 2012 EP Male Mood Swings – although news has it they’ve recently recorded a bunch of demos, so stay tuned.

The electro-rock outfit have now officially released a new single, ‘Tokyo Speed Thrills’, from the EP, accompanied by mind-bending surreal video featuring sliced up eyeballs and ants crawling out of a man’s palm. Sound familiar?

Well, they’ve taken snippets from the 1929 silent film, ‘Un Chien Andalou’ written by none other than the surrealist king himself, Mr Salvador Dali (alongside co-writer and director Luis Bruñel), the Melbourne trio have done them the honour of providing an equally obscure soundtrack (gritty-guitars, casio-tone disco beats and all). The idea of combining the two seems incongruous, but instead you get a big phat bizzaro-slap in the face. Marvelous.

Their driving riffs and furious disco beats makes for an adrenalin-rushing experience (along with the sweat-inducing cinema noir courtesy of Mr Dali). Hear more of their twitchy grunge-electronica on their Bandcamp page.

LISTEN: Cosmo’s Midnight

cosmo's-midnight

Do you like Instagram? I like Instagram. My friend’s a Lo-fi kinda girl but I’m more of a Walden. So too is this stunning new video from Cosmo’s Midnight, filmed entirely underwater and under what looks like an Instagram filter.

The Sydney-based duo (with the help of friends) shot the aquatic video themselves, which features an illusive underwater dancer, swirling around in sync to the music, who slowly and elegantly starts to peel off each item of clothing. It’s an absolutely mesmerising watch.

Cosmo’s Midnight first piqued peoples’ interest last year with their remix of Flume’s ‘Sleepless’, later released on a Future Classic compilation. But ‘Phantasm’ is Cosmo & Patrick Liney’s brand new single, which the twin brothers dropped this week. There’s something a little Purity Ring-esque to their sound- perhaps it’s the dreamy vocals of guest vocalist Nicole Millar, albeit more mellow and ambient. The single caters to all your electro-pop needs; its lush synths are tantalisingly sweet, its jolty beat will get you body-rolling, and the tranquility in Millar’s voice with soothe those stress-induced wrinkles on your forehead.

The brothers have now joined the Yes Please family, and will be releasing a new EP on May 8. But for now, treat yo’self to a free download of ‘Phantasm’ here.

LISTEN: Cherax Destructor

cherax

Cherax Destructor may be the fancy name given to the Australian freshwater yabby, but meet your new favourite (human) Cherax Destructor: singer/producer Patch Hutley.

The Sydney-based musician is pretty much Australia’s answer to Baths. If you’re unfamiliar with Baths’ sound, think atmospheric, squelchy beats with electronic hooks aplenty. Hutley dropped his ‘Objects In Space’ EP in October last year, but it’s his new material that has reeled us in (which you can find scattered across his various music and social media pages).

The adventurous ‘<3’ is jam-packed with fiddly samples and joyful melodies – all chopped up and twisted into one another. His songs generally move from instrumental hip hop to collaged IDM beats and tricks. Although he’s labelled his sound on his Soundcloud page as ‘friendship-hop’, it’s also bang on, as his songs are as warm and cuddly as good friendships generally get.

It’s not all samples and beats for Hutley though. He’s also branched out a little and released a killer cover of TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’. It’s a stripped back rendition with simple vocals and acoustic guitar, and it’s a charmer.

Catch Cherax Destructor at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on Friday 26 April as part of the Lonely Kids Club winter range launch party.

VCS-2

If you’re looking for something to get you in the mood, here’s a collection of luscious slow-jams, courtesy of Sydney R&B electro outfit VCS. At the helm of it all is Vinay Seeth (vocals), and he’s recruited his bro Sareth who helps out with production, along with a whole mixed-bag of guest artists.

Channeling The Weeknd with those old school R&B beats, these guys bring it all back, yet revitalise the nostalgia with a post-dubstep shake-up (see: ‘The Tempest’). ‘Is It Over Yet?’ and ‘Runaway’ are immediate winners, the latter’s distant glassy tones melding in so sweetly with Vinay’s soulful vocals. What really makes ‘H.E.R.’ another standout track in my books is the last 50 seconds: in a split moment the song completely shifts into a frenzying concoction of synths and percussion. It will simply blow your mind.

All these tracks plus more are featured on VCS’ debut Awake, and it’s available online for a price of your choice.

Braves-Sorrow

Another Perth outfit brewing a pot of infectious lo-fi pop is Braves, the side-project of Sunny’s Sean Anthony. Teaming up with mates Alex Di Giovanni and Kieran Conaghan, the trio have produced some really chilled out, sun-kissed jams as heard on their latest five-track EP, Sorrow.

Lead single ‘Hallows’ will warm your heart up immediately with its inviting first string of guitar notes later swelling into a blissful treat for your ears. Other must-listens on the EP include ‘Sadko In The Underwater Kingdom’ and the ‘90s-tinged ‘Baden Street’. Oh hell. Why not just listen to the whole damn thing. Clocking in at just over 10 minutes, Sorrow is short and sweet but still definitely worth your time.

Grab the EP from Braves’ bandcamp here.
