Regional Curse – ‘Miracle Cure’ (mp3)

Regional Curse is the solo project of Stacey Wilson who plays in Terrible Truths. From her press: Beginning in late 2008 as an instrumental noise project, a series of self-released cassette tapes have seen Wilson experimenting with the Regional Curse sound utilising home-made electronic drums and a malfunctioning looper pedal. Sounds pretty interesting hey. ‘Miracle Cure’ is taken from the ‘Natural Living’ release which is her third album and was created in her home in the autumn of 2012. Originally from Adelaide, Stacey now resides in Melbourne. ‘Natural Living’ is a unique post for who the hell but I was captivated by the understated electronic synth and spacious drum work. Regional Curse is released on Wood & Wire which is a project from New Weird Australia – an initiative designed to promote and support new eclectic and experimental Australian music. The Falls – ‘Please’

I posted The Falls ‘Home’ video the other week and I’ve now had the pleasure of previewing the full EP Hollywood, which is due out August 3. Somewhere in the back of Surry Hills, Sydney lives the Hotel Hollywood, which became the obvious heart of the pertinently titled EP. It was there that the Falls met, played extensively and wrote these six tracks. One can only guess at the sort of memories the duo made there. They have certainly shaped these songs and have been drawn from a relationship of intense closeness and emotion. The story of break-ups and make-ups is not for me to care for. My interest is in connecting a personal story in their familiar tales of love and loss, written within a beautifully folk, acoustically driven format. Whilst so many contemporary artists are reaching for more synth and pop, The Falls feel complete in a more traditional country structure, which only furthers a long history of talented Australian singer-song writers.

The single ‘Home’ is a stand out track that hopefully ends up on an expensive Australian tourism commercial. Add a few claps to the guitar lead and some sweet backing vocals to complement what is a lovely lead vocal story and you have a contender for capturing the hearts of all those girls needing more Boy and Bear in their life. Guys shouldn’t feel left out though because Hollywood goes on to explore plenty of male heartache, as souls are laid bare. There is a rare honesty to Hollywood that may be hard to sustain in future recordings. Either way it is clear that what so many experienced on those nights at the Hollywood Hotel must’ve been something special.

Kingswood

Money For Rope

Damn Terran

This Epic Tour kicked off at the Workers Club in Fitzroy with two big nights. I caught the ‘Sold Out’ Friday night show and it was pretty awesome. There were a lot of excited punters, a pit full of photogs and merch flying out the door. Earlier that day Kingswood claimed the JJJ unearthed spot at Splendour in the Grass so those dudes were pumped. I got there early to catch Damn Terran kick off the night with a thumping set that included their new track ‘Snake Magnet’ which is up on our FaceBook. Check out the full tour dates here – http://www.facebook.com/events/307992375950777/

More pictures after the jump. (more…)

The Field Trip – ‘Give Me A Break’ Video

The Field Trip – ‘Give Me A Break’ video looks like a collection of Super 8 shots but given the jello effect I’m gonna go ahead and guess it was shot with a DSLR and then given a ‘vintage look’. Please tell me if I’m wrong. Either way these kids are from Melbourne and have adopted the 60’s surfer fuzz sound that is easy on the ears just as the video is easy on the eyes. Nice work, look forward to more from these dudes.

Old Mate – ‘I Got Fired’ (mp3)

This one reminds me of Tex Perkins’ ‘Better Get A Lawyer’. Straight forward riff with lyrics that go something like “I got fired. I didn’t know why. So I stayed home. And I got too high”… what’s not to like. Old Mate is Pat Telfer of Bitch Prefect who had previously worked on this as a solo thing but is now performing with full band.
