LISTEN: Archdukes – ‘Soft Focus’

archdukes

New single ‘Soft Focus’ from Archdukes follows last year’s decent release ‘See Through Stare‘.That track had a serious MBV influence. ‘Soft Focus’ is more up, yet still quite dreamy. I like the mood and drum pace of this track. It’s a familiar sound executed well and builds nicely with simple lyrics and layers of guitar. Definitely worth checking out their pages below.

LISTEN: Ciggie Witch – ‘Back Aches’

ciggie witch

An ode to the working class by Osbourne Street youngblood Zac Denton recording with his friends under the band name ‘Ciggie Witch‘. ‘Back Aches’ is just one of a bunch of sweet tunes from his latest release Echidna Cottage available as a limited release, with delightful artwork, on cassette here. I can’t quite distill the reason I got into this one more then his earlier work but I can say the slide of Joe Foley really compliments Zac’s vocal. Or maybe it’s because as he sings he’s “just a quiet country boy”, so what’s not to like.

LISTEN: Standish/Carlyon – ‘Nono/Yoyo’

, , No Comment

standish

Standish/Carlyon are Conrad Standish (bass/vocals) and Tom Carlyon (guitar/electronics). Good band name. Easy to google. Take note kids. So I was down at the New Museum of contemporary art in the lower east side, NYC the other day. Yeah you read right – cool huh. And I was in both shock and awe at the number of sleazy moustaches on the faces of ridiculously good-looking people. If there was a soundtrack for what I witnessed it would have to be ‘Nono/Yoyo’. So what I’m saying is this track is so forward thinking, it’s both seedy and beautiful at the same time.

‘Nono/Yoyo’ is taken from Deleted Scenes, the new record being released in Australia by Chapter Music on Friday, 17th May with a simultaneous US release on New York label Felte. We are fast-tracking it for the US – ha! They played ATP recently and have a show at the Gasometer this Friday with Roland Tings and Perfume Production so be there or be a clean-shaven square.

LISTEN: Little Casino – ‘The Village’

, , No Comment

Little Casino have released their new EP All Fall Down recorded with Matt Redlich – the guy responsible for a huge output of hip Queensland-based music at the moment. Madeleine fed y’all a taste of these Brisbane / Byron Bay locals with a neat track ‘Bow and Arrows’ last year. That number sounded right to get our attention and because we like to nurture here at WTH; we are now pimping the fully fleshed-out EP with lead single ‘The Village’.

Let’s forget the ‘right sound’ they seem to have nailed and focus on the complete digress taken in this (brave) single. It’s a bursting set climax, with faint vocals and loads more soft pysch-thrash guitar and crashes. Kinda like a Stone Roses number – the sort of thing my ex would totally love to death. That’s what I see for this track. Passionate fans all hot and sweaty, packed into a dingy venue, peaking around 35 minutes in with ‘The Village’ becoming the rocking anthem of the night. I won’t be there but I want you to go and enjoy 🙂

‘The Village’ is available through digital stores and streaming services or pick up a limited edition, pre-release copy of their new EP at one of their shows:

3 April – Brisbane: Jet Black Cat Records (In-Store)

3 April – Brisbane: The End (DJ Set)

6 April – Melbourne: Toff In Town

7 April – Brisbane – Black Bear Lodge

11 April – Sydney – The Standard

12 April – Sydney – The Beresford Hotel

10 May- Byron Bay- The Northern

LISTEN: The Stevens

, , No Comment

I’m so fucking homesick right now. And then I hear this EP and it just crushes me. Up tempo guitar-pop that is as catchy as early Twerps on ‘Dance Alone‘. Alex MacFarlane and Travis MacDonald put this together and released a 6-track EP The Stevens last year. Originally released on CD-R and cassette but now it has won the seal of approval from Chapter music who are reissuing the self-titled EP on 7″ vinyl. Very nice. So pencil in the 5th April, which is a Friday, to get a jump on the weekend and pick a copy up from all good record stores or here.

I made the tough call of running ‘Teenage Satellites’ but I would plug any track of the EP… it’s that good. The debut LP is in the works with Mikey Young at the control desk. So we know it’s in safe hands. You can check them out supporting ‘The Wedding Present’ from the UK at the NSC but hopefully more local shows to follow.

Feb 27 –  Northcote Social Club, Melbourne.

Groovin’ The Moo 2013

, , No Comment

Beyond all the hype of the remodelled Big Day Out or the urban deconstruction of the ATP, you’ll find a series of kick-ass country parties called Groovin in the Moo. These have been going for a while and have had amazing success. The line-up is always Australian heavy and it’s the sort of bands you wanna get down with. I went to a similar festival a while back and I was in awe of how ‘into it’ the locals were. I guess triple J is the station of choice for youth in all corners of the country as they do come out for these shows. In a big way.

Bendigo has already sold-out but there are tickets left for others. So check out Alison WonderlandAlpine, Last Dinosaurs, Midnight Juggers, Temper Trap, Tame Impala and golden boy Flume. Not a bad day in the paddock.

Sat, April 27 – Showgrounds, Maitland
Sun, April 28 – University, Canberra
Sat, May 4 – Prince of Wales Showground, Bendigo – SOLD OUT
Sun, May 5 – Murray Sports Complex – Cricket Grounds, Townsville
Sat, May 11 – Hay Park, Bunbury
