Pogo – ‘Wishery’ (Video)

In case you’re new to the viral sensation that is Pogo, he’s a Perth-based electronic producer/composer most famous (y’know, “internet famous”) for cutting up clips from old Disney movies and turning them into songs. His work on Alice in Wonderland and Up was awesome, but his work includes remixes of Terminator 2, Dexter and the like. His YouTube channel is here, where you can find all of his fantastic work. Some of it rides along on the novelty factor, but other tunes are genuinely rad regardless of the origin of the samples.

His latest tune, ‘Wishery,’ is made up of syllables, chords and notes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In less than a week, ‘Wishery’ has shot to the top of the Hype Machine charts and amassed over 1.2 million hits on YouTube. It rocks the same schtick we’re used to now from Pogo, but people clearly aren’t sick of it yet. Play the video below to see why people are jizzing over his latest tune.

Parades/Boulet do Shoot The Player

Parades: Loserspeak in New Tongue from shoottheplayer.com on Vimeo.

The best track off one of the best Aus albums of the year. Nice to reflect on some good Aus music after the musical abortion that was the Arias.

Jonathan Boulet: Ones Who Fly Twos Who Die from shoottheplayer.com on Vimeo.

…and dummer Jonathan Boulet doing his own thang. Boulet’s newest track ‘You’re An Animal’ is released by Modular in December and is pulled from his upcoming sophomore album penciled in for the first half of 2k11.

Ghoul – ‘3Mark’

, , No Comment

Listen to

So I’m pretty pumped to hear that over the next six months we’ll be getting both a mini-album (due January 2011 through Speak N Spell/Inertia) and a full length from Sydney experimental/glitch/pop crew Ghoul. For those of us that were following the band’s MySpace blog in early 2009 as they wrote about the recording process before abandoning the the idea (and, so I thought, the album), this has been a long wait.

But all signs point to it being worthwhile. Not only does it mean we get TWO offerings from Ghoul, but the first track from those protracted sessions, ‘3Mark,’ is incredible. Ghoul have grown a lot since self-releasing their debut mini-LP A Mouthful of Gold in 2008. Although I’ve only heard one song, it’s immediately apparent enough that both the production and the songwriting have taken epic leaps forward over the last two years. At a time when home-recorded lofi chic is at an all time indie high, Ghoul have progressed to nuanced, crisper sounds, while the songs have less of a jazz-lite streak to them and diminish of tangential arrangements, no longer calling them on a necessity to keep the song interesting.

As much I love it, it’s nice to hear Ivan’s voice on something other than Seekae’s ‘Wool.’ And there’s a lot more where this come from around corner. With the aforementioned Seekae and Collarbones also releasing albums in the first half of next year, 2k11 could be a standout 6 months for Australian electronica.

Sunset Sounds ‘Foster Band Initiative’

, , No Comment

Sunset Sounds, the Brisbane spinoff of Falls festiva, is entering its third year and they’ve just announced their new fostering initiative. Basically, they team up a local media publication with a local band, with that publication giving their band editorial love during the month of November. But it’s not all lovely. These bands are actually involved in deadly competition Battle Royal style – or, rather, a spot on the Sunset Sounds line-up. Two spots, in fact. And you get to decide who gets it.

You can cast your vote via the Sunset Sounds website, with voting open between November 1st and Devember 1st. The winning artists will be announced on December 6th. You have the power to make/crush dreams right here. Make sure you check out the bands below and get voting. Why? Because there are some that definitely deserve the spot and others that definitely do not. I won’t say which as I’m not here to bias the competition like some pre-historic bird of prey or anything.

Anyway, meet the bands and their partnered media outlets:

Rave Magazine fostering Inland Sea

Courier Mail fostering My Fiction

Scene Magazine fostering Velociraptor

Sunday Mail fostering Blame Ringo

Four Thousand fostering Slug Guts

Groove Magazine fostering The Liars Chair

Bats Magazine fostering Ball Park Music

Biscuit Magazine fostering Lion Island

Brisbane Times fostering The Belligerents

Life Music Media fostering Charlie Mayfair

Sunset Sounds details

Sydney’s gig features the phenomenal line-up of all the bands featured above (and Spod, whose song wouldn’t upload for some reason. I blame my work computer. Check back tonight for some Spod love).

Anyway, you gotta dress up and get in the swing of things because all the bands will be dressing up as a deceased band and beginning their set with a cover of that band. It’s like a Phish Halloween gig, but without the hippies-cum-lawyers. And about two hours shorter.

Anyway, we have a prize pack for one reader than includes a double pass to the gig + a copy of Dappled Cities’ Zounds + a Dapplied Cities tea towel, to help bring the Oz indie rock to drying the dishes yo.

If you’re keen, email rsvp@whothehell.net with the subject “SYDNEY HALLOWEEN” by 5pm today. You know you want to. Do it. Include yr name and all that as well.

Oh Ye Denver Birds – ‘Walls’

Ghoul – ‘Swimming Pool’

Meanwhip, Brisbane’s gig has the above four bands doing their thang. It’s also a dress-up so you gotta get yr costume on. Anyone coming as Twilight characters gets a cronch punch.*

We’ve got a double pass for the gig on offer. Again, email rsvp@whothehell.net with the subject “BRISBANE HALLOWEEN” by 5pm today. Make sure you give us your name etc.
