Ross De Chene Hurricanes – ‘Um Yeah I Surf’ (mp3)

Listen to

Skinny white dudes can’t hold their own on the court? Balls. As if Bill Murray saving the day at three quarter time in Space Jam wasn’t enough to prove otherwise. This weekend, Melbourne raffs Ross De Hurricanes and The White Goods will be stomping all over a suburban basketball court in the name of a G.R.E.A.T Party (2).

Music and basketball? Who’da thunk. As punters from last week’s Community Cup would agree, music and sporting activities do go down well. For some slam dunk attempts and some rad party jams from both bands, head on over to Coburg Basketball Courts at 3pm tomorrow.

ps. Here’s the White Goods new track ‘Fools’.

Dirt Farmer – 'Johnny Marble'

(mp3)

Since relocating from Albury-Wondonga to Melbourne last year, Dirt Farmer have been working hard at the gig rounds and recording their debut EP with Colin Leadbetter (Whitley, Sarah Blasko).

They’re playing the Toff this Wednesday, and even if you’re not familiar with some of the other decent demos they’ve put out, it’s still worth gallivanting over to hear this cheery tune.

‘Quarter’ (mp3)

‘Lucy’ (mp3)

It sounds like this relatively new Sydney duo have straight up looted Rubber Factory and reassembled the parts. In this case, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. A few Auerbach muscles are flexed on Quarter which throws some sluggish riff retorts around, while Lucy is a sleazy garage number that has its fair share of cymbal/snare spasms coiled up between verses.

Scuzz and garrulous wails are alright by me, but it’s to useless effect while I’m sitting here in my clean shirt instead of stomping around somewhere with lager soaked carpet.

No EP out as of yet, but by the sounds of it, these guys are onto a good start.

Eastern Aquarium II + New Jonti

, , No Comment

The guys from EASTERN AQUARIUM are hosting their second installment this Sunday @ Tone, featuring the fine talents of Time Shield (Faux Pas), Electric Sea Spider, Slamagotchi, Nakagin and a DJ set from Jonti (Danimals)

We’ve got a dandy double pass to give away to the show. Just hit us up with why you want to win + your details to rsvp@whothehell.net by 5pm Friday 17th to go in the draw.

Speaking of Jonti, he’s expelled the entire colour spectrum in this blissed out video for ‘Firework Spraying Moon’. The clip was filmed in LA and directed by Henry DeMaio (Dam Funk, Mayer Hawthorne).

Looking forward to hearing more stuff when the new album Twirligig (Mistletone/Inertia) drops in October.

DZ Deathrays Top 5

, , No Comment

After spending the last few months waving the flag abroad, DZ Deathrays have returned back to our shores. Last week they pipped at an impressive #8 on NME’s Top 50 bands of 2011 list, with fellow Brisbane kids Bleeding Knees Club coming in at #21. Here, Shane rounds off a list of five of his favourite local upcomers.

‘Beams of Light’

“A Brisbane 2-piece that are totally fuzzed out and off kilter. Their songs are based around epic space travel and are delivered nice and brutal. The guys have just released their debut album and it’s damn good!”

‘Rat Bags’

(mp3)

“We took these guys on our last Australian tour and I really love their EP. It’s in the vein of that surfer pop slacker rock but all the songs are really well written with great hooks. Plus they can out smoke anyone. It made for an interesting tour van…”

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – 'Black Tooth'

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – ‘Black Tooth’ (mp3)

Listen to

A killer new track from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (try saying that five times). Hailing from Anglesea/Melbs these guys have spent the last few months putting the touches on their debut EP Willoughby’s Beach.

‘Black Tooth’ may begin with a frenzied assault of guitars, but after a quick tempo change it comes up swinging with the kind of negligence King Khan’s discipleship would thrust in your face.

To mark the release of ‘Black Tooth’ King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will be touring their surf sludge around the East Coast (see after the jump).

The band will also be playing a show with DZ Deathrays on the 18th of June at Ding Dong, so if you’re in Melbourne remember to get down.

Olympic Ayres – ‘Daylight’ (Animal Status remix) (mp3)

Listen to

Loving the new remix of Olympic Ayres tune ‘Daylight’ by NY’s Animal Status at the moment.

The track has been toned down a notch, with some Bag Raiders-type tambourine samples standing in for the jungle vibe of the original. That being said, it’s still remains a feel-good track at best.

Fit for radio, fit for a serious workout on my playlist and a track I’ll be holding dear to before the general retail collective decides to rotate this to exhaustion in their stores. Good stuff.
