Cut Copy – ‘Take Me Over’

, , No Comment

I think my favourite thing about posting the last Cut Copy song, ‘Where I’m Going,’ was the comment: “enough of this lame kumbaya shit. where are the SYNTHS guys!?”

I hate to break it to “simon,” who posted that comment, but he won’t be too much more impressed with ‘Take Me Over.’ This song goes even further in the Fleetwood Mac/Paul Simon (c. Graceland) direction of the previous song. This still sounds a lot like Cut Copy – probably on account of the meodic ‘ooos’ that populate every CC song ever (that’s a good thing) – but it’s definitely a move away from the sound that made them big.

That’s two from two now, which suggests the album as a whole (Zonoscope, pictured above) will be something of a departure. I’m excited either way. Even though the past two singles have grabbed me, I’ve loved everything these guys have put out since and including their I Thought Of Numbers EP and have faith that the album as a whole will be great – it has to be, look at that cover art?

Collarbones – ‘One Time’ (Justin Bieber Cover) (mp3)

Listen to

Those crazy Collarbones kids have done a kindof-remix-meets-cover of Justin Bieber’s worldwide smash hit song-of-the-year ‘One Time.’ I was pretty skeptical when I heard about this cover – I hate when bands ruin great songs by doing half assed covers, but Collarbones have put in enough time and creativity to ensure their version maintains the soul and sex appeal of the original and almost stands up next to otherwise untouchable source material. Kudos.

‘One Time’ is pulled from an upcoming release called Tiger Beats, which is a collection of the best Collarbones remixes and covers. This is ahead of their debut proper (I believe), which is coming out next April on Two Bright Lakes.

Numbers Radio Q & A

, , No Comment

Numbers Radio are one of my favourite Brisbane bands. Their (underrated) debut album dropped a little over a year ago, and they’re following it up with a new EP. It has some sweet guitar solos. We failed at organising a phone hook-up, so singer/guitarist Dave Orr kindly answered these questions I sent him.

1. How does it feel to be getting such awesome support from Triple J for Final Day?

Great, Triple J have been so supportive with our music. With “Final Day”,  we just didn’t know what to expect when we sent it in, but this time they actually aired it the same day it arrived in the studio! We were stoked!

2. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Tell me about the filming of it. Was it weird having cameras all up in your face in such a confined space?

The video was the most off-the-cuff thing I think we have ever done, seriously. We asked a friend of ours who gets into doing filmclips, to just rock up to our jam room at West End.
The intention was to just have something cool to chuck on YouTube, because we have so many crap videos people have done on their mobile phones.

The whole clip was filmed on a Canon hand-held standard picture camera which just has an amazing video function. We couldn’t believe it when we saw the final edit.  After showing it to a few people, we really noticed that it was just so raw and honest and thought – screw spending thousands of dollars, this is the clip! It’s perfect!

3. I got an “industry promotional” copy of the EP. Does the sale-able version have artwork as awesome as the artwork on your de-butt (lol Jessica Mauboy) album, Acquiring Satellites? Please attach examples if available.

For Final Day we didn’t go down the road of having artwork as such, we thought this time, we want something simple. It’s an EP (well,  a mini-album),  it’s short and to the point, so we wanted the artwork to say the same thing.

4. How was Radiowave in Bundy? Were the regional punters as badly behaved as usual?

Radiowave was awesome, we had a great crowd, and it was cool to see punters get into our new material. A few funny things happened, the singer from Comic Sans started stealing all the other band’s drink riders, then last I heard someone got their revenge by locking him in a porta loo for 15 mins!
Also, later on at the after-party, the singer from Grinspoon walked up to me and told me I had a bad hair cut. I thought that was kinda weird, I haven’t had a hair cut in months! Maybe I need one.
[SB -As if Phil Jamieson can point the finger at bad hair cuts.]

5. If today was actually your Final Day, what would you do with it?

Grab a carton of nice beer and go to Straddi.

6. You are an awesome power trio. Who are some of the band’s favourite power trios
?

The Living End, Muse, The Police, Supergrass (before they got the keys player), Children Collide.

Numbers Radio launch the Final Day EP upstairs at Tempo this Thursday night, with support from Spitfireliar and Fushia.

CMJ2010 New York City – Aussie Wrap!

, , No Comment

Every Autumn for the past 30 years, CMJ (College Music Journal) hosts the annual ‘CMJ Music Marathon’ – an annual event where bands and artists play at various clubs throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. Regarded as the only serious rival to SXSW, the event is centred around showcasing the most exciting buzz bands CMJ has covered throughout the year, and serves as a victory lap for established indie artists. This year featured the likes of Ghostface Killah, Surfer Blood, Angus and Julia Stone, Fourtet, and Phoenix.

In the past, CMJ has been influential in breaking artists like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, RATM, The White Stripes, The Strokes, and Feist. In more recent times, Australian and New Zealand acts have forged strong ties with the CMJ community, a relationship which has seen the likes of The Temper Trap, and Midnight Juggernauts build their US fan base with CMJ appearances. CMJ also offers artists a great opportunity to network with potential labels and managers, and also attend music industry focussed panels hosted by some serious players.

This year, CMJ 2010 hosted some stella performances from Aussie acts – Crayon Fields, Washington, Philly Jays, Paul Dempsey, The Jezabels, The High Highs, and Pivot (PVT) to name a few.

The Australian representatives certainly made an impact, with many New Yorkers feeling vulnerable that we’ve taken over the town (hide yo kids, hide yo wife).

Some of my highlights included – The Jezebel’s set at the Bowery Ballroom, which was simply awesome. An amazing venue, and the band showed NYC they had something genuinely inspiring to offer. Paul Dempsey played an intimate set for a lucky lounge room in Brooklyn, Angus and Julia charmed everyone in the Big Top, while Philadelphia Grand Jury introduced their 4th member when Simon stripped completely naked and played drums for the final song, at the College Day Awards inside NYU..

Highly inappropriate, and most certainly one of Australia’s finest moments..

In other news, the sold out CMJ Phoenix gig at Madison Square Garden, became a Phoenix/Daft Punk show when the French robots made an appearance toward the end of the set, mashing ‘1901’ with some Daft Punk classics! Tres bloody awesome… Until next year, PEACE OUT!

Montpelier clip, Last Boat

YouTube Preview Image

So we posted the new Montpelier single ‘Last Boat‘ a few weeks ago, to a rather enthusiastic response from the indie-webs music community. The lads have just dropped us the new clip for the track, exclusively to show ya’ll.

Using the old painstaking ‘paper-stop-motion-technique’, which took creator Paul Andrew Rhodes around 17 years to make, a small bearded hipster goes on an exciting hallucinogenic journey into a nautical wonderland. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but the hipster rides a squid.. Enjoy.

Purple Sneakers DJ Mix No.2

, , No Comment

Those crazy Purple Sneakers kids (behind the aptly named Purple Sneakers club nights) are back with their second release this year. While the full tracklist isn’t out yet, they’ve released a promo mix for you to stream/download below to start getting y’all excited.

It’s pretty impressive for any DJ crew let alone an indie DJ crew to get two releases out in the one year so throw some kudos their way and have a listen. (Nick Skitz doesn’t count because he’s not a crew and is a pile of shit).

We Mix You Dance Vol. 2 is out on January 11 via Inertia and features 46 tracks. The tracklist for this promo mix (note: not the actual final release) is after the jump.
