Architecture in Helsinki – Heart It Races (Pink Skull remix) (mp3)

Listen to

I don’t even have the original version of this song but I thought I’d post the Pink Skull (?) remix. It’s not that I find this remix particularly enriching or adventurous. In fact I have trouble listening from beginning to end. But I wanted to point out that it’s very common marketing strategy now for bands, in order for them to break new songs without giving everything away too soon, to giveaway the remix version of whatever song that is. I’m pretty sure this is why this remix version is floating around the internet quite a bit. For example, last year the Yeah Yeah Yeahs put out a Diplo remix of their first single Gold Lion of their new album. This was around for a few weeks before the real song was on myspace. This is the first case I can remember that used this rollout strategy. I suppose it could work really well if the remixer is well known enough that it would pick up interest, I’m not sure this is the case with this single for AIH.

The E.L.F – ‘Cockroaches’ (mp3)

Listen to

This is Darren from Gerling’s new project and according to other Australian blogs I’m way late on this. So it sorta reminds me of the Dust Me Selecta era Gerling that I was first introduced to. I’m not sure if they’re going that direction again or going away from it cos this project seems to be pretty dancey. This song isn’t bad.

Vanden – ‘This Time’

Listen to

Don’t be fooled – there’s a lot more work behind Vanden that one might suspect on first glance.  Originally, this Melbourne 5-piece started life as down.to.size but after member and direction changes, a new moniker surfaced.

They released their debut EP towards the end of last year entitled Victims which was produced by the super-cool Forrester Savell, who seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to working with rock bands lately (Karnivool? Dead Letter Circus? Yeah…) There’s definitely a bit of Glassjaw influence in Vanden (if the dude in the red shirt didn’t give it away already), and Victims an EP which is hook-laden from start to finish.  Having never seen these guys live, I can only guess that their live show would be one ferocious rock onslaught.  They’re doing a run of shows in May, so if you’re in Victoria, get along and tell me what they’re like.  I hear there’s guitar acrobatics too, and probably amps turned up to 11.

Anyway, ‘This Time’ is a pretty killer track, my fave off their EP, so enjoy rock-nerds.
