Last Dinosaurs – ‘Zoom’ (mp3)

Listen to

Here’s another fantastic sunny jam from the Last Dinos. Get a load of those twin riffs! Gotta have a pretty cold soul not to dig this one.

The track is the new single off Last Dinosaurs’ debut album ‘In A Million Years’. The guys worked with Jean-Paul Fung at BJB before the album was shipped off to the UK and mixed by Eliot James (Two Door Cinema Club, Kaiser Chiefs and Noah & The Whale).

The record drops Feb, so for now the good vibes in this teaser should be enough to suffice all your end of year roadtrips/happy vacation times.

Iggy Azalea – 'My World'

WTH founder + good pal Jerry Soer sent me a tip off about Iggy a few months back. Took it in good comedy and left it sedentary in my inbox, until the name came to mind again when I saw this clip hitting overtime on youtube yesterday.

Iggy Azalea’s a 21 year old rapper originally from Mullimbimby on the NSW coast. Dropping out of high school, she took her savings and moved to Miami at 16.

The white girl rapper tag seems to be working for her, although whipping out our flag at 0.33 mark and flailing the ‘I’m Aussie’ brand comes across as unnecessary when she’s cussing off in her American accent.

That aside, a little background on her previous hit, ‘Pu$$y’ here. I have some serious concerns with her use of sidekicks as ‘visual decor’. That poor five year old on the horse seems to be enjoying the whole fiasco though.

There’s obviously a big market for her, since people these days will generally froth over anything with an impressive word-per-minute rate and nice hair.

Glad she shipped her ‘talents’ out of the country a while ago, there’s a place for hype-grrrls producing lame, unintelligent material and rapping about their privates over yonder. If it’s block colours and conditioned hair you’re after, there’s Sportsgirl for that. Ugh. Pass the kool aid please.

Lincoln LeFevre – ‘Miami’

Lincoln LeFevre – ‘Miami’ (mp3)

Listen to

Forgive me people who take music blogs seriously, for I have sinned and will sin again.

Lincoln LeFevre is a stalwart in the Tasmanian punk rock scene, having played in Enola Fall and the excellent Ride The Tiger, who I wrote about last year.

I saw him play a great solo acoustic set at this year’s Poison City Weekender, where I also took the above photo.
He released a fantastic album “30 Watt Heart” in 2008, to much acclaim from Tasmanians and people who know Tasmanians. Why didn’t I pick up on it? Well, I didn’t start with WTH until September that year and fuck, I guess I was busy being a fucking idiot or something.

But hey, I’m telling you about it now and that’s better than never, right?

‘Miami’ is the song I find stuck in my head the most, but it’s worth heading over to his Triple J Unearthed page to hear “Hey, Alright! which has some fantastic lyrics including:

Such a sweet thing, a white ribbon to hold her hair down
She walks through the crowd like an angel but she speaks like a tramp
And she said ‘what are youse fuckin’ lookin’ at
?!’

The Vasco Era – 'Rock and Roll Is The Only Thing that Makes Me Feel Good' (video)

Imagine being the dude pitching this clip:

“Alright. You’re gonna walk right by here and we’re going to dump gravel onto you from that two storey building over there. There’ll be a bit of bird shit, two litres of milk and a bit of tongue action from Dan’s German Shepherd – and at the end we’ve found two fangirls who want to scribble all over your face in thick black Sharpies. And don’t worry about the giant arachnid we’ll be lowering onto your face, he’s a pretty friendly guy. So yeah, like I said.. easy shoot.”

Sid: ‘I’m in.”

Phondupe – 'Aviary West'

Phondupe – ‘Aviary West’ (mp3)

Listen to

A great debut number from new electronic outfit Phondupe out of Sydney.

The cut and paste beats in the intro set the pared-back pace for the rest of the tune. There’s a bare-bones aesthetic about this track; everything from the spurts of jazzy piano to the glitchy, ambient fades are used sparingly. I find a lot of vocals from acts in this category a bit weak and underwhelming, or overcompensated by smattering everything in reverb and looping –  so this is refreshing to hear.
The guys are currently working on a series of releases, collaborating with artists from Ireland, Italy and New York.

Nice production vals here, keeping my eye on this duo.
