Iowa – 'Love Song'

, , No Comment

I met Billy Corgan last week. He seemed like a reasonably nice guy. There was a mother nearby who shoved her young child in his path. Ritual blessing or a faint attempt at Corgan recruiting another drummer half his age, the kid was a bit freaked out by the bald behemoth, but I don’t really blame him (this guy). Anyway, this Iowa track managed to scoot in with all my 90’s reveling post-Splendour. The album they just released – Never Saw It Coming sounds decent* (*throwbacks). But if Mudhoney/Swervedriver melancholia is your thing, and you didn’t get the chance to wade in mud at Splendour and see Corgan yell mean things at the sound guy, I suggest you cease your nostalgic weeping and get along to one of these launch shows.

New Weird Australia – ‘Western Schism’

Leaving – ‘Days Apart’ (mp3)

‘Western Schism’ is part two of the geo-specific compilations put out by New Weird Australia. This one covers eighteen bands and artists from Perth in Western Australia. I’ll let New Weird Australia explain the compilation.

“The schism herein is as much geographical as it is artistic. These artists are outliers in both the literal and creative sense of the word – they celebrate their physical relationship with the world by amplifying it artistically. Distance need not be a tyranny – as is shown in this collection, it may in fact give us just the space we need to run free and get wild”.

I’ve come across a couple of these Perth-based artists but most are new to me. It’s great to gain exposure to new experimental work from WA so nice work New Weird. Check it out for yourself over on their site.

Skinny Jean – ‘Pulverem’ (mp3)

‘Pulverem’ is the colloquial expression Aussies use to express a desire to ‘destroy them’ when referring to the Brits at the Olympics. Nah, it’s not. I don’t know what it means. It’s probably Latin though yeah? ‘Pulverem’ is a dark, complex and catchy as fuck, taste of the forthcoming LP from Brisbane band Skinny Jean. It’s to be called:

Diving Saucer Returns from a World Where the Sun Never Shines

Francolin – ‘If You’re On Fire’

Francolin – ‘If You’re On Fire’

Listen to

How bout this one? Vocals that make you wanna sing along with all your heart, catchy drum snaps and wonky gypsy guitar that conjures open fires and Devendra Banhart chillin with some free spirit babes. Now forgive me if you suffer from tall poppy syndrome and hate The Cat Empire but Francolin have managed to recreate that grass roots vibe of catchy party music that requires mandatory dancing, big smiles and happy times. Y’know, like before the Cat Empire played the footy show. It’s not just the trumpet break outs but the up-lifting mojo that Francolin have going on. ‘Hospital Song’ has been getting around and our Sounddoc bro covered it well so I’m plugging ‘If You’re On Fire’ as a prediction of what you’ll be talking about with that fuzzy feeling in your belly post live show.

Check the album here to decide for yourself – http://francolin.bandcamp.com/

‘Let Down’ (mp3)

Listen to

‘I Wish You Were Dead’ (mp3)

Listen to

Everyone else seems to have hit the ground running on the Bored Nothing wagon, but I might as well have smacked my face into the pavement and passed out for a few months. The artist here is Melbourne’s Fergus Miller. Bored Nothing is his pseudonym for ‘pseudofied’ Brooklyn low-fi. I half expected another sloppy garage record after glancing at the hand drawn nappy hair caught in the crayola whirlpool on the cover of his latest release, Bored Nothing III. But scoot past the apathetic nom de plume – as much as this plays out like an effortless ditty for three thirtyitis and mid arvo daydreaming, you can’t shake the musicality happening on these tracks.

So many favourites on this release. ‘Popcorn’ is the best sampler of the driving bass lines and soaring harmonies this guy revels in, while the boppy ‘Let Down’ sounds like Jack Tatum singing out of the punch bowl at a prom hosted by Beach Fossils and friends. Bored Nothing’s lengthy back catalogue (Beard of Bees of particular note) is sitting up on his bandcamp and deserves a thorough listen. However, the dude also needs to pay his bills, so please enjoy responsibly by attending the show he’s playing with Mining Boom, Beef Jerk and King Tears Mortuary hosted by our blog pals All I Do Is Listen in two weeks.
