LOOK: Distant Tempos – MMW
Melbourne Music Week and Mess + Noise put together the Berlin-esque event of Distant Tempos. 6 independent artists performed on Tuesday night with Oliver Tank, Mitzi, Lost Animal, NO ZU, Thrupence & Simon Winkler.
If you have been living under a rock, the pop up venue is held in The Argus Building. If you haven’t had the chance to check out an event at Where?House you most certainly should, there are a few more nights left of incredible music this weekend.
Oliver Tank dropped-it-like-it-was-hot but my personal favourite of the evening was NO ZU, “the wild, ‘heat-beat’ sounds of the New Age”. Sadly they won’t be playing again until January 17th where they are supporting ESG at the HI FI.

Unconvention
Here in Brisbane, we bloody love a music convention. Sure Big Sound has got the serious razzle dazzle, but a cursory glance over the line up for this weekend’s Unconvention reveals a wide range of quality local and interstate talent keen to spread their knowledge around like so much delightful and informative herpes. Speakers include WhoTheHell co-founder/Triple J champ Dom Alessio, iconic music journalist Clinton Walker and Dogs In Space director Richard Lowenstein. Joining them are hard working Brisbane industry folk like Jesse Barbera (who runs The Alhambra Longue), musician and recording sage Cam Smith and Go Betweens bassist John Willsteed . Also worth getting psyched for: performances from Kelly Loyd, James X. Boyd (who we’ve featured previously as part of The Majors and Running Gun Sound) and Mexico City. So if you’re in the Brisbane area (or can get there by Saturday) and wanna be inspired and practice your ‘networking’, head down to The Edge in South Bank (next to the State Library) on Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th of November.

LOOK: Good Sniff draws ‘Pig City’
Local illustrator Good Sniff has gone to the liberty of sketching more than 300 individual faces belonging to 106 Brisbane bands.
“It got to a point about midyear where I’d be scooting around in the Valley and I’d recognise people because I’d drawn their faces. Which is creepy.”
She describes it as “character design exercise that got waaaay out of hand”.
Do take a closer look at this. It’s scarily accurate, even if there’s at least one member of every act who looks a little seedy <Gung Ho>.My favourites are Violent Soho looking doing 50 shades o’ Nazareth, JSS’s hair diversity, typical bong-eyed Dune Rats and the left Origliasso twin who looks like Julia Zemiro on meth.
Apparently she’s doing more revisions to this one, but I’d definitely like to see her take on another state.

LISTEN: Forces – ‘World In Focus’
I like my techno dirty and industrial ya. Forces are a couple of cyborgs (Alex Akers and Thomas Kernot) that have unloaded a new synthetic piece of sound called ‘World in Focus’ – free copy here. That press shot is pretty creepy and it figures as they are label mates with Mel’s fav weirdo Kirin J. There is a Future Sounds of London vibe with a darker Presets vocal. I dig the rapid fire beats and have no doubt this would be crazy huge on a festival stage. The self-titled EP is coming to earth via Midnight Juggernauts’ label, Siberia Records early Dec so keep a bionic ear out for it.

LISTEN: Blackmilk – ‘The Prospector’
I’d been pluggin Blackmilk in the lead up to the release of their record In Lak’ech and I’m happy to say it’s out and sounds very good. ‘The Prospector’ is their new single and it’s a complete departure to what we have heard earlier. This one is a stripped-back tune with all focus on the vocal and stark narrative accompanied by backing harmony and select violin builds for extra drama. A good range from a very accomplished record by the Perth yocals. In Lak’ech is a deep rocking record with an amazing period sound that combines the best of Australian country story-telling with psychedelia and Tumbleweed like, stoner guitar drifts. Def worth hearing.

LISTEN: Fuyuko’s Fables – ‘Slappy and Graham’
These guys were in Melbourne recently and I feel bad for not letting y’all know but y’know – we were having major surgery on the site so things slipped through the cracks. The good news is Fuyuko’s Fables is just a boat trip away in the kingdom of New Zealand and hopefully we’ll see them back real soon. ‘Slappy and Graham’ is taken from the EP Everybody is Weird available on their bandcamp. It’s a captivating listen. Good snare brushes and guitar picking with that New Zealand twang in the vocals creating an at times melancholic story telling but the harmony is quite gorgeous and not unlike The Shins.
