INTRODUCING: Doom Mountain

, , No Comment

Doom Mountain

Surf rock has been well represented over last few years in Australia. Bleeding Knees Club, Dune Rats and Step-Panther are all bands that are representative of the success felt when a couple o’ guys can get together and bust out a killer riff.

Right now, there’s another band that is gunning to similar heights. A band with the enthusiasm of a grommet on his first Al Merrick, the reckless endangerment of an average day at Shipsterns. That’s what Brisbane’s Doom Mountain are going for.

Previous singles ‘Thrill Seeker’ and ‘(I’m So) Wiped Out’ point towards the laid back vibes of Melbourne bands that have been infected by a rabid 6-foot swell, like Bachelor Pad and Ross De Chene Hurricanes. However, their new track ‘Lonely Child’ shows a more, brooding post-punk side to the band, with a looming guitar line that I’m sure The Murlocs are kicking themselves for not thinking up first.

PREMIERE: The Murlocs – ‘Space Cadet’

The Murlocs - Space Cadet

The Murlocs are impressive for a number of reasons. The main being that they’re one of only a few lo-fi/ garage bands that don’t bore me to death. I don’t know if it has something to do with growing up in near Geelong and having limited things to complain about, or the good influence of having The Dingoes frontman as your frontman’s old man. If ramshackle ‘jangly’ garage tunes constitutes something OTHER than writing whingey songs about day jobs, I think these guys are great advocates. ‘Space Cadet’ is the newest single from the five piece, taken from their forthcoming record. It’s another simmering slingshot of rhythm and blues with Ambrose Kenny-Smith’s respiratory snarl at the helm. Plus, this track is about space zombies…ROCK ‘N’ ROLLA.

Ambrose says that ‘Space Cadet’ was “one of the only songs saved from the original recordings we did with Stu (McKenzie) at Cook’s mum’s house in Colac. We had it sent to Mikey Young to mix. Sadly not long after, the rest were gone with his laptop that was stolen so we’ve since been re-recording the rest…”
There’s a clip that’ll be rolling out from Zonk Vision in the next few weeks too. The video was filmed by Jaso Galea on the egde of Lake Corangamite near Colac. We’ve been told that the finished deal looks like ‘Black Sabbath with computers in the 70s’. Looking forward to that.
Murlocs tour announcement happening soon, we’ll keep you posted.

WHOTHE HELL PRESENTS: Fifth Floor Warehouse Party ft. The Murlocs

, , No Comment

Anyone who has a decent appreciation for local music understands the importance of a shoddy venue. If the walls aren’t peeling, the toilet seat isn’t unhinged and the floor doesn’t sound like velcro when you trod on it, it’s probably not worth your time. This might be though. Along with the folk from Mess & Noise and Inpress, we’re proud to present the first installment of a warehouse party series by Fifth Floor.

Not many of us live on Lena Dunham’s party budget so don’t expect a mechanical bull or…this. Fifth Floor however, have put together a solid line up of bands, Baby Janis and the country’s finest projection artists to make your eyes pop.

The party will be held at a “secret” location on Saturday August 3rd with a venue announcement closer to the date. Headlining the bill are our favourites The Murlocs and joining them are Flyying Colours, Strangers From Now On (who played our last party), The Octopus Ride, Dan Trolley and Premium Fantasy. There will be plenty of visual art and projections happening too (because, Brunswick) – courtesy of Thomas Russell aka. Astral Projection & ZonkvisionIf that’s not enough of a social lubricant for you, then you ought to stay home.
