Secret Birds – ‘Laser Archipelago’

Here’s another tune I’ve been meaning to post since forever. It’s from the excellent album/36minute-long EP ‘Peace Forrest’ by Brisbane’s Secret Birds, which I highly recommend for anyone who is fan of the like of Sun Araw, Peaking Lights, or even Tame Impala’s more adventurous listeners. (If those references are lost on you, imagine the aural equivalent of the above photo).

It sounds like this relatively new Sydney duo have straight up looted Rubber Factory and reassembled the parts. In this case, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. A few Auerbach muscles are flexed on Quarter which throws some sluggish riff retorts around, while Lucy is a sleazy garage number that has its fair share of cymbal/snare spasms coiled up between verses.

Scuzz and garrulous wails are alright by me, but it’s to useless effect while I’m sitting here in my clean shirt instead of stomping around somewhere with lager soaked carpet.

No EP out as of yet, but by the sounds of it, these guys are onto a good start.

A sweet jam from new uber-label Rice is Nice signee Donny Benet. Word has it he’s the son of an Italo-disco accordianist – who knew that shit was genetic?
