Simple Things (Hidden Suns remix) (mp3)

From the dudes who brought you ‘gold vinyl’, comes an EP with a sleeve that reads like a beat wizard’s wet dream.

Hammocks and Honey have handed it over to Faux Pas, Fatti Frances, Collarbones, Hidden Suns and WORNG to mix up some of the tunes released on the Spellbinder EP that came out late last year.

Hidden Suns’ shiny rejig of ‘Simple Things’ is defs my top tune here. Also noteworthy is Faux Pas’ brooding remix of ‘Toolz’.

Best of all you can grab all these gems + (cool artwork by Cailan Burns) for free here.

Hammocks and Honey are playing The Empress this Saturday (16th) with Jonti + Dream Kit + Machine + Cat Full of Ghosts.

Little Scout – ‘We Are Walking Out’ (video)

Back in 2008, I decided I wanted to blog for this site in order to improve my writing (yes, I was that naive) and to gush about bands I really really liked. Hearing Little Scout’s first single ‘Dead Loss’ and not seeing anyone else gushing about it prompted me to email Jerry Soer and ask if he’d let me join the fun here. They were one of the first bands I posted about.

Now I’ve kind of sort of left the blog (as has Jerry), and Little Scout are releasing their debut album, after releasing some great EPs and building a solid touring CV.

Fuck yeah, history.

Ghoul – ‘Lodum (Rising)’ (mp3)

So word has it that Ghoul’s debut LP proper will now be out early next year, not mid-2011 (ie. now) like they suggested earlier this year. I’m not sick of their mini-LP Dunks yet, but still – you can’t play with a boy’s heart like this. If you are do need something to tide you over, they’ve released a track from the album to keep us on the hook. It’s fair bit different to Dunks, working with a bit of tribal “never-have-that-recipe-again” groove, but still sounding undeniably like Ghoul thanks to singer Ivan’s downright incredible voice. Best voice in Australian music? Probs.

Whoever’s idea it was to slap a few apostrophes in this band name for some harmless fun should probably be shot. Screwing with syntax may get your band cut through, but it’s highly inconvenient for the rest of us trying to conduct a google search.

Pronounced ‘isles’ not ‘ills’, this new Melb three piece scored a Parklife spot after just one gig. Frontman Simon Lam also plays in The Ocean Party and Kins.

The first thirty seconds of this track fizzles out on the contemplative slow burner, but some gorgeous layers begin to surface soon after. A thoughtful, transient track – multi-tiered parts jump out of the ether and evaporate into the troposphere in a seamless dissolve. That cruisy guitar hook plucked from the void at 2.11 tops it for me.

Willing to get past the grammatical mindfuck, because I’m convinced this is a pretty awesome tune.

Catch I’lls’ at Parklife alongside other locals Gold Fields, Kimbra, Bon Chat Bon Rat, 8 Bit Love and more.
