The Ovaries – ‘Devil’s Snare’ (video)

I have mixed feelings about this band.

On one hand, I really like this video. On the other hand, their Q & As with their fan base (who are either young goth dudes who want to bang them, young goth queer girls who want to bang them, old dudes who want to bang them and a smattering of idiots just to make things interesting) are fucking cringe-worthy. They actually used to have a lot more Q & As on their Youtube, but they’ve disappeared, thank God.

I suppose they’re basically Short Stack, but with real vaginas instead of the implied ones that Shaun, Andy & Brady have.

And that’s the thing  that gets me, I guess. Part me thinks  that they’re reasonably proficient on their instruments and they can write a song, so why bother comparing them with men, or women?

But I can’t stop myself from doing that and it’s  because they use their gender as a gimmick, as a vehicle for their music, and that shits me off.
In an older video, they explained this in detail, if somewhat naively.
They tried to use the drummer’s sexuality as a gimmick too, but they’ve since deleted the Youtube video where they taunt her with chants of “we like penis, you like vagina…” and hopefully realised that’s a shitty thing to do to someone, even in jest.

In conclusion, they have more than a thousand fans on Facebook – some who’ve got Ovaries tattoos – and I’m just a sad old hater, I guess.

I find your article a little confusing. Saying the band is using their gender, to target a specific crowd is what every band does, perhaps not on a gender specific way. Bands like Parkway Drive target people by appealing to their interests. Take the Karma video for example, it targeted Australian surfers and Hardcore listeners in their film clip by surfing and mixing it with their music. In my opinion is that not what every band does, write songs, dress a certain way, talk a certain way, in an attempt to connect with a crowd or target audience, not doing so would be stupid, as you would not be successful.
The next thing is that targeting their fans is a bit shallow and not to mention a little harsh. I myself being one of those fans, who am not a little goth, emo, or any of the labels you placed upon the Ovaries listeners.
Bands have been using their sexuality or gender as a “VEHICLE FOR THEIR MUSIC” for years, take The New York Dolls, who cross dressed as a way to gain attention, and their are one of the fathers of post-punk music all the way to the current days of boy bands and girl bands. My final point has to do with the sledging of band members that you have addressed, especially about the drummer… Laura.
I admit the videos that they post, is not the type of thing i would do if in their shoes. Sure forming a connection with fans is important, and the way they have chosen to do it is again, a way to connect with their audience.

<3 One of those Tattooed idiots who can see the reason behind doing what the majority of the music scene has done since the mid 70's, use what they can to appease their target audience and connect with them.

okay, usually I don’t respond to hate like this.. But I feel like you need to know something about my “taunts” to Laura in our old Q&A video.. The reason I took the down was because I was worried that people would misunderstand like you obviously did.. Anything that I say to laura I say in joke. And Laura is not the type of person to not say anything if she’s offended.. I don’t have any problem with Laura being a lesbian and I don’t have any problem with the gay community.
Laura is one of my best friends and I guess in having that close relationship I can make jokes about her being a lesbian. Just because when I first met her she was straight and I was also oblivious to the fact that she was gay until she introduced her girlfriend to me and I was like wahhh. I took down the video because I didn’t want people to think I was being “shitty”… If laura doesn’t have a problem with it you shouldn’t either.

But yeah good job on the hate, will shake your hand along with lizi one day 🙂

    Live Long and Prosper.

I actually think you’ve done well to write this article, because a few of the points you bring up are true.

And I don’t really think you’re ultimately hating on them, and you give them a shitload of credit and seeing them below criticising you or calling you a hater annoys the shit out of me.

It’s like you’re not allowed to have a goddamn opinion.

    I find this fascinating.

The “get lost, hater” or “hahaha fuck you” from an anonymous, assumed member or fan/friend.. or a band member replying with laughter and ‘kudos, I wanna shake your hand someday’.

It seems really immature, when all it is – is someone taking notice of what you’re doing, and criticising it. You WILL encounter that in the music industry, and if all you do is have fans/friends to say “hey fuck you fuckhead” or you reply so unprofessionally.. Well, good luck. This is what people do, they criticise, and they share their opinion. I think it was nice clearing up the thing regarding your drummer’s sexuality and the video that was taken down, that’s sensible. But if even one of you get’s pissy so easily at the slightest bit of critique on the internet, that’s not just the person critiquing you that get turned off your music forever, but a ton more who read it, like me. All because it seems so fucking childish.

Good luck in the future. The video is awesome.

    Good article.

I personally would have given them a lot less credit if I wrote this, as i don’t like their music (it’s not my taste).

The thing that shits me off though, is that they’ve commented here trying to defend themselves.

Good bands accept criticism and bad write-ups, even if the opinions expressed appear to be unwarranted (not that this applies in this case).

I’ve never known a band to make comments on a review, at least not professional ones.

Next time take it on the chin, girls. Just because you’ve tapped into a market that’s given you a thousand fans, and more specifically loving and dedicated fans, does not mean everyone is going to like you.

Again, I don’t like your music, but I think I’ve been fair in my comments so I hope you don’t bother trying to defend yourselves. Then again, you can do whatever you like I suppose.

I must apologise for my comment, it was very immature. Alice was right, it was not professional. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. 🙂
