WATCH: Mining Boom – ‘Craigie’

, , No Comment

‘Craigie’ is the follow-up single to ‘PDA’ from the Mining Boom debut ep ‘Dining Room’. Mel described it as a fictional account of Gareth Liddiard as a 9 year old bully. Personally, I can’t wait for the Little Birdy cover. Directed by Dan Nicholls in collaboration with Mining Boom and featuring some whack editing technique known as ‘datamoshing’ which is intentionally producing artifacts as an effect. Initially it looks like a bad compression on the video (well it kinda is) but it’s actually manipulated quite cleverly to morph the scenes like a dissolve transition. The piñata-style section is brilliant!

Mining boom are playing the last 3 Tuesdays in October at the Workers Club in Melbourne with rad town supports:
Valley Girls (Tue 16) – 9pm
Bored Nothing (Tue 23) – 9pm
Hot Palms (Tue 30) – 9pm

LISTEN: Pear Shape – ‘Staring Competition’

, , No Comment

Pear Shape follow in the happiness footsteps of The Holidays and those Jinja hippies but with a sharper twang like our fave Americans, Vampire Weekend. In fact, a track on the new ep is dangerously close to that sound. Anyho, I’m getting my smile on and enjoying these Sydney peeps as the sun shines and colour resurfaces from my grey winter in Melbourne. ‘Staring Competition’ is taken from their self-titled ep and is a darn sweet tune. Pear Shape are playing the Grace Darling in Melbourne on the 13TH OCT. Also I almost called these guys ‘The Pears’ which would be a cool name too hey! Oh and for those playing at home – yep Mel T posted an earlier version of ‘Staring Competition’ here.

LISTEN: Melodie Nelson – ‘Martha’

New single by Melodie Nelson called ‘Martha’ which does sound like it would go beautifully on the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. Quite lovely. Her tones suit the air-like ambience and I’m instantly captivated. Gush. New record ‘To the Dollhouse’ out 2nd Nov.

LISTEN: Rites Wild – ‘Rites Wild Theme’

, , No Comment

Rites Wild is Stacey Wilson, the talent behind Regional Curse and Terrible Truths, and is about to release the LP Ways of Being which is a collection of songs from tapes that Rites Wild put out herself and two (I think) unreleased songs. This sound is a more ‘up’ sound then Regional Curse and I can’t help but falling for it. Rites Wild sounds familiar in that it feels calming and secure. You’re taken down a road you’ve maybe been before but still find irresistible. The atmosphere is filled with beats and manipulated vocals in perfect harmony. If this girl isn’t scoring the next Australian indie break-out film, I’ll be heart broken. I picked up this track from the awesome Sound Summit sampler which is def worth checking out. You can pre-order the ‘Ways of Being’ LP here.
