Amanda King – ‘Yellow Velvet Mountain’ (mp3)

Amanda King has just released her new EP Rapids. ‘Yellow Velvet Mountain’ is the first track on the release and I was quite taken by her gentle vocals. Having been captivated by First Aid Kit earlier this year, the “produced in Stockholm” line in King’s bio, peaked my interest. King has a similar folky story telling ability but there is a lot less country in this release. Instead its a winding journey of guitar amplification and feedback looped into an atmosphere that allows King to use a tone that describes vast lanscapes and disparate climate. Really nice cover art by Danilo Stankovic adds additional charm to this fine release.

Edward Deer – ‘Washed Ashore’ (mp3)

Edward Deer is a Sydney guy that has a record called ‘About Monsters’, due to be released this September through Laughing Outlaw Records. The first single taken from it is the reflective number ‘Washed Ashore’. An acoustic guitar and loops is how Deer feels most comfortable and with these pipes, why not. It allows him to tease us with tales of hope and love as he strums his way into our hearts.

Deer has some shows in July:

Thurs July 19 – The Annandale’s ‘Staff Picks’ night (w/ The Dreamboats)

Sat July 21 – SOSUME @ The Standard, Surry Hills (w/ Bell Weather Department & Thieves)

Field Trip – ‘Cream’ EP

Field Trip – ‘Cream’ (mp3)

“You should shut your mouth, you don’t know what you’re talking about”. Hmm, I hope they’re not talking about our humble music blog. Melbourne lads, Field Trip released their EP ‘Cream’ early in the year. We featured the ‘Give Me A Break’ video recently which got me interested in hearing the whole EP. It’s good folks. Fiona Apple comes after them in my itunes and the unfortunate comparison highlights the low-fi production which is ok but I can’t help thinking these guys could hit Oasis highs with their raw talent. Cream has a nice fuzzy hum and for sure the 60’s surfer cruise must come naturally because the guitar licks are neither pretentious nor over cooked. Apparently they are done with shows for the year so pick up the EP and long for the summer.

YouTube Preview Image

‘Oh Hebe’ is the new single from Pigeon, a band from Brisbane that have ripped up the festival circuit and landed the QLD support slots for Van She. ‘Oh Hebe’ is not a typical indie dance track. It has a jarring vibration and slamming drum beat that is a bit twisted and I can see these guys up there with Art vs Science and winning plenty of JJJ love. They have heaps of shows coming up so check em:

Tiny Spiders – ‘Fresh pots’ (mp3)

What is that band I can never remember… oh yeah, friggin Lightning Bolt! So amazing at primavera in Barcelona that I’ve been hooked ever since. Sadly, it’s rare to hear a band go for that sound and not be shit. However one of those rare bands that isn’t shit is Tiny Spiders. ‘Fresh Pots’ is lifted from their self-titled vinyl release that is packed full of raucous tunes, some better than others but one thing is for sure – there shows will be rad.

They are on tour with some great supports to pimp the record, which has been released digitally with a limited edition vinyl 12” out August 3rd.

Wednesday July 11th – The Grand Poobah, Hobart (with Tiger Choir)

Friday July 13th – Gasometer, Melbourne (with DEAD, The Fuses, Tender Bones)

Saturday July 14th – Format, Adelaide (with Gold Bloom, Sparkspitter)

Monday July 14th – Monday Night Mass @ NSC, Melbourne (with Great Earthquake, Little Killing)

Thursday July 19th – Terrace Bar, Newcastle (with The Si Claros, TBA)

Friday July 20th – Black Wire, Sydney (with Raw Prawn, Low Life, F’Tang)

Saturday July 21st – Lass O Gowrie, Newcastle (with The Si Claros, Carlin Dally)

Heavy Beach – ‘1963’

Heavy Beach – ‘1963’ (mp3)

‘1963’ is the first single from Heavy Beach’s debut album that is set to be released late in 2012. Heavy Beach is Ali E of who the hell favs Damn Terran, Mark Renall from Howl At The Moon and ClaytonPegus of Spun Rivals. ‘1963’ features deep bass vibrations with hooky rhythm guitar and a warm 90’s heroin feel. The drama of Ali E’s vocals is a welcome throw-back to passionate rock vocals as opposed to so much garage spoken word.
