Chet Faker – 'House Atriedes'

‘Jeans & Wallet’ (mp3)

You may recall Chet Faker (aka. Nick Murphy) who went all kinds of crazy on the interwebs (above James Blake in Hypem’s #10) after we MAP-ed his cover of Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ back in May.  The bearded juggernaut is back with a nice platter of downloads for y’all.

Overdoses of electronica usually have a sluggish effect on me, but Chet keeps his cool without inducing a yawn. House Atriedes’ iridescent intro stretches out onto a vast expanse of synth, while those liquid harmonies keep on with the smooth restraint of ‘No Diggity’. This track is my fave out of the Chet Faker pool so far, with ‘Jeans and Wallet’ trawling closely after.

Serious aural elixir. The guy can do no wrong.

How much ‘Fitzroy’ can you pack into a garage? Self explanatory salute from Melbourne (via GC) collective The Delta Riggs. FT: large fixie parade, several cute pets, customised denim, one party time hobo + a cameo from a former WTH contributor.

‘Time’ is the first single off Talupo Mountain Music Vol. 1. The band are in the process of laying down ‘Vol. 2’, which is expected to be released late September.

Produced & Edited by Petty Thieves.

The Frowning Clouds – 'All Night Long'

, , No Comment

Listen to

New jam from the Frowning Clouds ft. typical revival rama-lama.

Last year’s Listen Closelier proved that the throwback aesthetic is what these Geelong kids do best, but somehow this one comes off as predictable as the title.

Cue introductory hollering, splintery solos and mod cuts – all part of the FC’s happy hip-busting modus operandi. Certainly a boppable tune, but against the greasy harmonica of ‘Time Wastin’ Woman’ and the swampier sounds on 2010’s debut, this single grovels over closely to Beatles cover band. Then again, the ‘Clouds aren’t parading as messiahs of new music. If they’re content with provoking freakbeat fan boy/fan girl moves from the collective at most gigs, then I guess they’re doing a good deed.

Catch The Frowning Clouds joining party people Eagle & The Worm on their ‘Good Times’ tour throughout August. The guys will be doing two single launches in Melb & Syd in September. See below for full dates.

Big Scary – 'Mixtape' Video Premiere

Here’s the first peek you’ll get on the interwebs for Big Scary’s brand new clip.

The Melb duo have buddied up with UK animation whiz Alice Dupre (who’s worked with Martin Scorsese and on films such as Scott Pilgrim VS. The World).

This vid features all the necessary kitsch + other cute junk (TRAMPOLINE HAM) to accompany that catchy piano jam.

Really psyched for the release of the band’s debut album which finally drops in October.

Big Scary are on the road this month supporting Liam Finn – check the links below for full details.

Hammocks & Honey – Spellbinder Remixes

Simple Things (Hidden Suns remix) (mp3)

Listen to

From the dudes who brought you ‘gold vinyl’, comes an EP with a sleeve that reads like a beat wizard’s wet dream.

Hammocks and Honey have handed it over to Faux Pas, Fatti Frances, Collarbones, Hidden Suns and WORNG to mix up some of the tunes released on the Spellbinder EP that came out late last year.

Hidden Suns’ shiny rejig of ‘Simple Things’ is defs my top tune here. Also noteworthy is Faux Pas’ brooding remix of ‘Toolz’.

Best of all you can grab all these gems + (cool artwork by Cailan Burns) for free here.

Hammocks and Honey are playing The Empress this Saturday (16th) with Jonti + Dream Kit + Machine + Cat Full of Ghosts.

I'lls' – 'Thrice'

(mp3)

Whoever’s idea it was to slap a few apostrophes in this band name for some harmless fun should probably be shot. Screwing with syntax may get your band cut through, but it’s highly inconvenient for the rest of us trying to conduct a google search.

Pronounced ‘isles’ not ‘ills’, this new Melb three piece scored a Parklife spot after just one gig. Frontman Simon Lam also plays in The Ocean Party and Kins.

The first thirty seconds of this track fizzles out on the contemplative slow burner, but some gorgeous layers begin to surface soon after. A thoughtful, transient track – multi-tiered parts jump out of the ether and evaporate into the troposphere in a seamless dissolve. That cruisy guitar hook plucked from the void at 2.11 tops it for me.

Willing to get past the grammatical mindfuck, because I’m convinced this is a pretty awesome tune.

Catch I’lls’ at Parklife alongside other locals Gold Fields, Kimbra, Bon Chat Bon Rat, 8 Bit Love and more.
