Bad Dreems – ‘Too Old’ (mp3)

Bloody good track. I’ll let Bad Dreems speak for themselves:

i got a new job, i’m wondering when the hell I’ll ever see your face again. got on that bus and i rode for hours, promise that i’ll never see your face again. i don’t know what’s going on, but yeah, i know there’s something wrong with you. too old for someone like you. too old for anything new. out of my mind, stumbling. sleep for hours, nothing gets done. i go out and i drive around, nothing makes sense. nothing ever found. i don’t know what’s going on, but yeah, i know there’s something wrong. too old for someone like you. too old for anything new.

Opposite Sex – ‘A Year On Your Own’ (mp3)

The self-titled record by Opposite Sex was released last November by Fishrider records. The vinyl release has just seen another pressing and it’s also widely available online for legit purchasing. Opposite Sex have banged out a pretty pop piece of music that has a distinct sound because it’s a melting pot of ideas and presented like a quasi vaudeville performance. There are punk European gypsy flavours in the mix as well but at its heart, it’s a straight forward indie pop-rock record that sounds real nice.

Melodie Nelson – ‘Six Six Six’ (featuring Geoffrey O’Connor)

Listen to

To say that I was easily seduced by the wonderful tone of Melodie Nelson’s opening vocals would be an understatement. It was more an instant obsession. Partnering with Geoffrey O’Connor for this new track ‘Six Six Six’ works a treat as he also has one of the most seductive tones in Australian music right now. So according to the presser, ‘Melodie Nelson is the solo project of Lia Tsamoglou, one half of now defunct Sydney experimental drone duo Moonmilk and ex-bassist for alt-folk group Rand and Holland’. ‘Six Six Six’ sounds like the sort of thing you’d play to a group of people right before you convince them to do something only acheivable under the spell of complete surrender. Y’know, drink their blood or sacrifice them to a worthy god/godess… or just make out. The production has a velvety texture that goes down real easy and the balance of guitar, strings and drums is devine. I may also be eating chocolate as I write this.

The Jones Rival – ‘Mind of a Dreamer’

I sat on this track for a bit as my first listen was brief and ambivalent. I’m now ready to announce that after two more listens, I like it. That’s the level of commitment we offer Australian music here at who the hell. If your track is kinda boring at first… a few more listens might get you over the line. Sydney band The Jones Rival, consisting of the four handsome gentlemen pictured above, have just released their shakin’ vintage rock sounding single ‘Mind of a Dreamer’. It’s a builder for sure and it grew on me mostly because the track has some really nice grooves and a strong, deep and thundering vocal. Catch their shows at the Oxford Art Factory in August.

Heavy Beach – ‘Good Intentions’

Listen to

We couldn’t be more excited about the debut album from Heavy Beach due out late 2012. In the mean time they have launched another smash out of the park in the form of ‘Good Intentions’. A track that opens like a dirty Dead Meadow drone and then runs away with Ali E’s warm vocal holding your hand through a tale of dark adventure leading to a happy ending of triumph. Or something like that… it’s good ok.

Launching the single in Melbourne on:

Friday, 10 August 2012 at Yah Yah’s on Smith St, Fitzroy.

w/ Ocean Party (awesome) & Go Violet (brisbane)

The single is available as ‘pay what you like’ from their BandCamp – heavybeach.bandcamp.com

Mining Boom – 'PDA'

Mining Boom – ‘PDA’ (mp3)

Listen to

Mining Boom are a three piece from Perth who’ve been making music in Melbourne recently. ‘PDA’ has a real loose, ramshackle sound going on. Those riffs sound like they were plucked straight from Room On Fire…but wahey, what do I care! Makes gravitating to this tune as easy as the big guy above.

‘PDA’ is the first track off Mining Boom’s Dining Room EP. (And while you’re stopping by, do have a listen to ‘Craigie’ – which in my mind sounds like a good (fictional) account of Gareth Liddiard as a 9 year old bully.)
