rainbow

I’ve been wanting to post Rainbow Chan for a while. Her excellent cover of Lovefool is just gorgeous. Then I found this single – with seriously awesome artwork! Nice to see original photography and total artist commitment. Shot by supercool bestie Sui Zhen. What a lovely piece of sunshine ‘Skinny Dipping’ is. Very happy days. And it’s available for cash or bandwidth via Silo Arts & Records & Frenchkiss Label Group (Worldwide).

LISTEN: Braves

Braves-Sorrow

Another Perth outfit brewing a pot of infectious lo-fi pop is Braves, the side-project of Sunny’s Sean Anthony. Teaming up with mates Alex Di Giovanni and Kieran Conaghan, the trio have produced some really chilled out, sun-kissed jams as heard on their latest five-track EP, Sorrow.

Lead single ‘Hallows’ will warm your heart up immediately with its inviting first string of guitar notes later swelling into a blissful treat for your ears. Other must-listens on the EP include ‘Sadko In The Underwater Kingdom’ and the ‘90s-tinged ‘Baden Street’. Oh hell. Why not just listen to the whole damn thing. Clocking in at just over 10 minutes, Sorrow is short and sweet but still definitely worth your time.

Grab the EP from Braves’ bandcamp here.

PREMIERE: Saskwatch – ‘I Get Lonely’

, , No Comment

Saskwatch_I Get Lonely

And here’s the ‘premiere’ of the new track from Saskwatch. You’ve probably already heard it getting flogged on Kingsmill’s show on Sunday. So technically…it’s not really a premiere. But it is the first official place on the internet where you can break your play button – before this track gets a proper release or is played the point of oversaturation (which it probably will).

Saskwatch recorded ‘I Get Lonely’ with Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring) at the Curtin Bandroom late last year. It’s definitely a grittier track; sounding like the hypothetical of Tote patrons migrating to Cherry for a throw-your-hands-up boogie on a Thursday night instead. Young knows how to keep a good track potent – those simple riffs that fire off against Nkechi Anele’s vox are the guts of this tune. Add in the horn section midway, and King Khan is dancing.

‘I Get Lonely’ will be released as a one-off, non-album single tomorrow on 7” via Northside Records with the Brain Children (Young and Max Kohane) remix of ‘Your Love’ as the B-side.

LISTEN: Archdukes – ‘Soft Focus’

archdukes

New single ‘Soft Focus’ from Archdukes follows last year’s decent release ‘See Through Stare‘.That track had a serious MBV influence. ‘Soft Focus’ is more up, yet still quite dreamy. I like the mood and drum pace of this track. It’s a familiar sound executed well and builds nicely with simple lyrics and layers of guitar. Definitely worth checking out their pages below.

WATCH: Camperdown & Out – ‘Manly’

, , No Comment

Camperdown&Out

We’ve been diggin’ on Camperdown & Out a whole lot (the guys also wrote a little something for last month’s Collective Peg).

Here’s the video premiere for their loveable track ‘Manly’. And in all its boot drinking, ferry hopping, leisurely paced bro-venture glory, it’s probably a good contender for Manly Council’s unofficial theme song too.

Camperdown & Out’s album Couldn’t Be Better is out March 22 on Popfrenzy.

LISTEN: Ciggie Witch – ‘Back Aches’

, , No Comment

ciggie witch

An ode to the working class by Osbourne Street youngblood Zac Denton recording with his friends under the band name ‘Ciggie Witch‘. ‘Back Aches’ is just one of a bunch of sweet tunes from his latest release Echidna Cottage available as a limited release, with delightful artwork, on cassette here. I can’t quite distill the reason I got into this one more then his earlier work but I can say the slide of Joe Foley really compliments Zac’s vocal. Or maybe it’s because as he sings he’s “just a quiet country boy”, so what’s not to like.
