Tiny Spiders – ‘Fresh pots’ (mp3)

What is that band I can never remember… oh yeah, friggin Lightning Bolt! So amazing at primavera in Barcelona that I’ve been hooked ever since. Sadly, it’s rare to hear a band go for that sound and not be shit. However one of those rare bands that isn’t shit is Tiny Spiders. ‘Fresh Pots’ is lifted from their self-titled vinyl release that is packed full of raucous tunes, some better than others but one thing is for sure – there shows will be rad.

They are on tour with some great supports to pimp the record, which has been released digitally with a limited edition vinyl 12” out August 3rd.

Wednesday July 11th – The Grand Poobah, Hobart (with Tiger Choir)

Friday July 13th – Gasometer, Melbourne (with DEAD, The Fuses, Tender Bones)

Saturday July 14th – Format, Adelaide (with Gold Bloom, Sparkspitter)

Monday July 14th – Monday Night Mass @ NSC, Melbourne (with Great Earthquake, Little Killing)

Thursday July 19th – Terrace Bar, Newcastle (with The Si Claros, TBA)

Friday July 20th – Black Wire, Sydney (with Raw Prawn, Low Life, F’Tang)

Saturday July 21st – Lass O Gowrie, Newcastle (with The Si Claros, Carlin Dally)

Friday August 3rd – The Waiting Room, Brisbane (with TBA)

Heavy Beach – ‘1963’ (mp3)

‘1963’ is the first single from Heavy Beach’s debut album that is set to be released late in 2012. Heavy Beach is Ali E of who the hell favs Damn Terran, Mark Renall from Howl At The Moon and ClaytonPegus of Spun Rivals. ‘1963’ features deep bass vibrations with hooky rhythm guitar and a warm 90’s heroin feel. The drama of Ali E’s vocals is a welcome throw-back to passionate rock vocals as opposed to so much garage spoken word.

Regional Curse – ‘Miracle Cure’ (mp3)

Regional Curse is the solo project of Stacey Wilson who plays in Terrible Truths. From her press: Beginning in late 2008 as an instrumental noise project, a series of self-released cassette tapes have seen Wilson experimenting with the Regional Curse sound utilising home-made electronic drums and a malfunctioning looper pedal. Sounds pretty interesting hey. ‘Miracle Cure’ is taken from the ‘Natural Living’ release which is her third album and was created in her home in the autumn of 2012. Originally from Adelaide, Stacey now resides in Melbourne. ‘Natural Living’ is a unique post for who the hell but I was captivated by the understated electronic synth and spacious drum work. Regional Curse is released on Wood & Wire which is a project from New Weird Australia – an initiative designed to promote and support new eclectic and experimental Australian music. You can make artist submissions here – info@woodandwire.com.au.

The Falls – ‘Hollywood’ EP

The Falls – ‘Please’

I posted The Falls ‘Home’ video the other week and I’ve now had the pleasure of previewing the full EP Hollywood, which is due out August 3. Somewhere in the back of Surry Hills, Sydney lives the Hotel Hollywood, which became the obvious heart of the pertinently titled EP. It was there that the Falls met, played extensively and wrote these six tracks. One can only guess at the sort of memories the duo made there. They have certainly shaped these songs and have been drawn from a relationship of intense closeness and emotion. The story of break-ups and make-ups is not for me to care for. My interest is in connecting a personal story in their familiar tales of love and loss, written within a beautifully folk, acoustically driven format. Whilst so many contemporary artists are reaching for more synth and pop, The Falls feel complete in a more traditional country structure, which only furthers a long history of talented Australian singer-song writers.

The single ‘Home’ is a stand out track that hopefully ends up on an expensive Australian tourism commercial. Add a few claps to the guitar lead and some sweet backing vocals to complement what is a lovely lead vocal story and you have a contender for capturing the hearts of all those girls needing more Boy and Bear in their life. Guys shouldn’t feel left out though because Hollywood goes on to explore plenty of male heartache, as souls are laid bare. There is a rare honesty to Hollywood that may be hard to sustain in future recordings. Either way it is clear that what so many experienced on those nights at the Hollywood Hotel must’ve been something special.

‘This Epic Tour’ in pictures

Kingswood

Money For Rope

Damn Terran

This Epic Tour kicked off at the Workers Club in Fitzroy with two big nights. I caught the ‘Sold Out’ Friday night show and it was pretty awesome. There were a lot of excited punters, a pit full of photogs and merch flying out the door. Earlier that day Kingswood claimed the JJJ unearthed spot at Splendour in the Grass so those dudes were pumped. I got there early to catch Damn Terran kick off the night with a thumping set that included their new track ‘Snake Magnet’ which is up on our FaceBook. More pictures after the jump. (more…)

The Walking Who – 'Candy Flu'

‘Candy Flu’ (mp3)

The Walking Who are three guys out of Wollongong. ‘Candy Flu’ is nice bit of cruisy psychadelia with a definite Brian Jonestown Massacre flavour, and I’m loving the scribbly projector aesthetic of this clip. The guys have an excellent album out of the same name which projects much of the same comatose prog-psychadelia, muffled out twangs and other space oddities in between.

The album is available for free download at their bandcamp page right here.
