The Twerps – supported by Jonny Telafone – in Pictures

The Twerps

The Twerps packed out the GoodGod Small Club in Sydney on Sat and we had another new contributor Michael Perelini head down to capture the show. He described the support by Jonny Telafone as pretty wild and Jonny definitely left his mark of the crowd. The Twerps have just been listed for the Sound Summit in Newcastle which will be well worth checking out.

The Majors – ‘Hello Columbo’

The Majors – ‘Hello Columbo’ (mp3)

Listen to

The Majors’ Facebook page describes them as ‘Brisbane’s fourth best calypso band’ (yeah, you didn’t know we had such happening scene down here did you?), but they’re actually a lot closer to our best garage soul pop group. If I was writing for The MX or something, I might say “It’s a MYSTERY why ‘HELLO COLUMBO’ isn’t already a hit” (cause Columbo’s a detective, see…) but luckily I’m not, so I can just tell you how undeniably excellent this track is. With ringing, melancholy guitar and naive lyrics delivered in a voice of complete world weariness by James Boyd, topped off with science fiction keyboards, this is a layered and emotional song that demands repeat listens.

New War Album Launch In Pictures

, , No Comment

New War’s self-titled debut record was launched at the Northcote Social in Melbourne on the weekend. The LP has been released in Australia/NZ through Sensory Projects, and out Worldwide via US label Fast Weapons. ‘New War’ is also the first LP to be released on Polyester Records’ brand new vinyl pressing label. Their launch at the Northcote social was packed full and their set was as loud and intense as the recording. It’ll be a real shame if The Drones don’t put these guys on the ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ ATP line-up. We sent along our brand new contributor REBECCA CAPP to snap the show.

The Murlocs – ‘Tee Pee’ (mp3)

Listen to

Baby Janis is back. He’s obviously inherited some harmonica skills from his old man, Dingoes frontman Broderick Smith.

‘Tee Pee’ is another jangly pastiche (loose catchy riffs, Tennessee snarl) the Murlocs can throw into the good time, time-warp. Mikey Young worked with the guys on their new EP, which was recorded in Ambrose’s nan’s spare room.

The Tee Pee EP launch is happening at The Tote on Aug 31.

Fabulous Diamonds – ‘Inverted Vamp’

Commercial Music is the third record from the Melbourne band Fabulous Diamonds. Nisa Venerosa and Jarrod Zlatic have mastered a beautiful piece of introverted drone-pop that takes you on a dark and wondrous journey through dreamland. Beautiful cover art by Karl Scullin.

Launching the record:

September 1st – John Curtain Band Room, Melbourne.

September 8th – The Square, Sydney.

Iowa – 'Love Song'

, , No Comment

I met Billy Corgan last week. He seemed like a reasonably nice guy. There was a mother nearby who shoved her young child in his path. Ritual blessing or a faint attempt at Corgan recruiting another drummer half his age, the kid was a bit freaked out by the bald behemoth, but I don’t really blame him (this guy). Anyway, this Iowa track managed to scoot in with all my 90’s reveling post-Splendour. The album they just released – Never Saw It Coming sounds decent* (*throwbacks). But if Mudhoney/Swervedriver melancholia is your thing, and you didn’t get the chance to wade in mud at Splendour and see Corgan yell mean things at the sound guy, I suggest you cease your nostalgic weeping and get along to one of these launch shows.
